ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey's armed forces said it "fully seized control" of the country Friday and its president responded by calling on Turks to take to the streets in a show of support for the government.

A loud explosion was heard in the capital, Ankara, fighter jets buzzed overhead, gunfire erupted outside military headquarters and vehicles blocked two major bridges in Istanbul.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in an interview over FaceTime with the CNN Turk, dismissed the action as "an attempt at an uprising by a minority within our armed forces." His office declined to disclose his whereabouts saying only that he was in a secure location.

It's gonna go down that way here.

It never goes down any other way with totalitarians. Either our military takes them out, or someone elses does. On rare occasions Death takes them out before it comes to Mil intervention, Roosevelt for example.

Erdogan has been whittling away at the freedoms Attaturk brought to Turkey. Erdogan has been reinstating Muslim restrictions and taking away the secular state Attaturk established, nibble by nibble. Good luck to the coup. I hope it succeeds. I have been watching Erdogan’s moves for years.

This from 6 years ago.

". . . 32 percent to 38 percent of Turks (upward of 25 million people) would never support the [Islamist] AKP or want to live in a country shaped solely by its values."

Tens of millions of Muslims in Turkey are "Islamophobes" like us?

I think the link is still good.. just show.

“Turks waant secularism.”

Not enough of them do; that’s why Erdogan — who is an islamist — was elected president.

Yes the crowds seem pro Erdogan. It appears the coup is failing. Its not hard to lead Muslims into Islamic autocratic rule. The Koran supports it. Secular government is generally in spite of Islam.

Does Putin have a hand in this?

No, he already evacuated nearly all Russian nationals/speakers from Turkey, and drove most Syrian ISIS into Turkey cutting off the ISIS oil transport and black market.

This is Obama's fallout.

You have it backwards ... the islamist are the tribe, the majority of Turkey became secular traditional under Ataturk.

Trump MUST clap the Islamists and tools of the Islamists in Obama’s government in irons before he starts his inaugural address.
