Apparently he miscalculated. Stalin is the guidepost for how to stay in power as a dictator. He would never have been caught in something like this. He routinely purged his top military people every so many years. He stopped for a while during WWII, but started up again not long after the end of the war.

He let the old top brass out of jail about a year ago in a deal to fight the Kurds.

I hope that they can restore the Republic.
