Posts by me are infrequent. It is gratifying to see this thread break the 100 post mark. Thank you.

[[Work without having to go to an online forum and find out you have to type in a mountain of commands to access repositories to MAYBE get that printer of yours to work]]

Hmmm- plugged my printer in, linux saw it fine- everything works as it should without having to do anything-

Yes some things are difficult in linux- however, it’s become pretty easy for most things as long a stuff is supported- click and go really- linux supports many printers now without having to fiddle with settings or repositories- older printers might have problems- but printers are cheap these days- get a new one, plug it in, bingo set to go-

[[Photoshop and Vegas are processor intensive and do not run well in virtual environments.]]

I am runnign windows 10 iso (free) under VM- I could NOT get it to work well under virtual machine- however, I isntalled virtual box and it runs very very well- not sure why it works better than virtual machine, but it does on my machine at least-

I LOVE the vitriol! WOW! This is AMAZING. You guys are off the chain today.

So, if you read this, you’ll realize this isn’t extending to home users, and for good reason. They’re doing this for enterprises to allow for more flexible licensing.

This will NEVER come to home users. They are pushing for more 365/Azure integration for home users. They’ll move to a value-add program for home users to allow them to a la carte their experience vs. an OS that’s full of features they’ll never use.

for htose hwo want ot see if linux works o ntheir machiens- or to see what it looks and feels like- you can try it without installing it- download the flavor you like, burn it to a CD- and you reboot, run it, check it out, then shut down- no changes made ot your windows machine at all

They call it a live CD- I would recommend linux mint cinnamon edition (as it is quite similar to windows feel and look and menu system- other distributions like XFCE or Mate or whatever were a bit too dissimilar to windows look and feel for my liking- Cinnamon edition has a nice start menu look- folders, etc)

With hte live CD you can go online too- you’ll be using firefox, but you can also use other liek chromium or whatever- (but you’ll have to ‘reisntall it’ each time you reboot as no changes gto your system will be made and you’ll lose everythign you do whiel in a lvie CD session (BUT you can update your live CD after you’ve ‘installed’ thigns like Chromium, or gimp or whatever- so that you don’t have to keep ‘reinstalling’ them- you’ll just have to make a new CD)

if linux runs on your machine- then it does everythign wondows does for basic stuff where no expertise is needed like email, online browsing, etc-

I woudl stay away from other distributions like Debian until you get more familiar with linux- Debian is pretty hard ot use- it’s too geeky- Ubuntu or mint are hte way to go if you just want ot get a feel for linux without too much difficulty

> If you want to control the operating system, you’ll have to upgrade to Linux at some point.

Not necessarily -- OpenVMS is getting a port to x86_64, and there are a few non-unix OS-dev projects.

> And if it is critical enough, you’ll have to compile the kernel yourself.

In that case I'd advise against anything "Unix-y" and advise using an OS that's formally verified; something in SPARK/Ada or maybe a copy of Verve.

Short term, windows is better, but if you are thinking legacy past 5 years, why would you stick with an expensive fossil? I will save $thousands over that time period.

I am not particularly happy with Windows 10. The version of Photoshop and Vegas Pro that I am using are both several years old, both still do all that I need them to do. Windows 7 64 came free on my laptop and I have no intention of updating it or Photoshop or Vegas. I also use some freeware tools that work well for certain tasks. So I am not sure that switching to Linux would save me any money.

I have a Nextbook Flexx 10 2 in 1 laptop/tablet with a 10” screen that others who own them are working to get Linux up on, so far the drivers for the touch screen, Bluetooth, sound card, etc. are still not working. When these problems are solved I will most likely give Linux a try on it since I purchased it for email, Internet browsing, and creating documents on the road.

It is funny that you refer to Windows as an expensive fossil because whenever I am using either Linux or Android I always feel like I am roughing it. Linux is great but it has never felt as polished as Windows.

I run windows 10 in a virtual machine just fine to do my adobe photoshop work on- i use linux for everything else- and don’t allow my VM to access the Internet

Exactly same situation for me... running Win 10 in VB for Photoshop only..

windows emulator on Linux. It is called WINE.

"Wine (originally an acronym for "Wine Is Not an Emulator") is a compatibility layer capable of running Windows applications on several POSIX-compliant operating systems, such as Linux, Mac OSX, & BSD. Instead of simulating internal Windows logic like a virtual machine or emulator, Wine translates Windows API calls into POSIX calls on-the-fly, eliminating the performance and memory penalties of other methods and allowing you to cleanly integrate Windows applications into your desktop."

Win 10 downloaded seamlessly for me replacing Win 7.
I even complimented them on FR.

Then on July 1 it auto-downloaded an update which locked up my (undocumented) copy of Office 2010.

office 10 is a well documented evil. It should have in the Terms of Use: Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.

Maybe the “consumer fee” would drive many to check out Linux?
For sure, but Linux - and the programs that run on Linux - are not the same as Windows.
I've used MS since the DOS days, and at 60+ years old, I really don't want to relearn not only the OS, but all associated programs.

Thank you for correcting things. I was lazy and ignorant as usual, and am glad to hear that wine is better than an emulator. I don’t use it because I don’t need access to Windows applications, and am really not all that interested in the Microsoft world any more.

“whenever I am using either Linux or Android I always feel like I am roughing it. Linux is great but it has never felt as polished as Windows. “

That’s why I suggested staying with windows short term is more usable. But for me, I have database, cad, java, websites and other legacy intellectual property that I hope to pass on, so my time frame is decades. Given a few bumps and dings, I am now fully transitioned to Linux, and it gets better literally daily. So that’s my mental calculation of cost/benefit.

Given a few bumps and dings, I am now fully transitioned to Linux, and it gets better literally daily. So that’s my mental calculation of cost/benefit.

For the typical user, the operating system is fairly inconsequential, so there is no compelling reason for most people not to use Linux distributions. But there is a learning curve especially for substitute programs for video and photo editing programs that don’t have the same level of support and documentation as their Windows counterparts. Also there are many features we end up taking for granted.

Last night I fired up one of my old computers that has a very expensive sound card for a home recording studio. It dual boots into Windows XP or Windows 98. Believe it or not I still have a backup tape drive that I made during Windows 3.11 days. I actually have some old files backed up on tape that I keep meaning to archive. The latest drivers for that tape drive are for Windows 98. The latest drivers for the expensive sound recording card are for Windows XP. It is possible that both of those pieces of hardware may have some support in Linux that is not available in later versions of Windows.

I got a little sidetracked... when I was using Windows XP last night, I noticed that there are features in Windows 7 that I take for granted that found again that Windows XP does not have.

No worries.. and I didn’t mean anything negative at all ;)

I still miss ome of the things I could do on WIN (I still prefer DOS, but those days are long gone >.<)..

Been moving over to Linux for about 1+ decades. Miss some of the games from the WIN days, but, oh well, I prefer security overall... and most apps and games I can either run on Mint, or can get an equal to match it. (Been playing HL and HL2 on Linux for about 6 years :D)
