Donald Trump’s Campaign Signals He Will Pick Mike Pence as Running Mate

Donald J. Trump’s campaign has signaled strongly to Republicans in Washington that he will pick Mike Pence, the governor of Indiana, as his running mate, though Republicans caution the party’s mercurial presidential candidate may still backtrack on his apparent choice.

Mr. Trump’s advisers have told national Republican officials that they are preparing to make an announcement with Mr. Pence, according to three people with knowledge of the conversations, who were not authorized to discuss them publicly. His campaign has said that it will unveil a running mate for Mr. Trump in New York on Friday.

Mr. Pence, a former congressman and radio host, emerged over the last week as the strong favorite of Mr. Trump’s political advisers and senior officials in the Republican Party.

But Mr. Trump himself has sent conflicting signals in recent days, as he has subjected his potential running mates to a final round of screening. He addressed a rally in Indiana alongside Mr. Pence on Tuesday night and met privately with him several times.

On Wednesday, Mr. Trump and his children threw together a hasty series of conversations with other finalists in the vice-presidential search, including Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey, Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama and Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker.

I love how all the experts on FR are saying that Trump has made a mistake with Pence. What do they know? They could not hold a candle to Trump and have no clue how to win!

That goes for all the second-guessing. If it's Pence, that's fine by me. However, I'm not going to jump the gun and accept a rumor about "signals" from the NYT. Trump could well be embarrassing the MSM with this. We'll know for sure tomorrow.

Hahaha. And Kasich, one state over, too. Close, but no cigar!

It’s about winning hearts and minds, especially in the rustbelt states that have been hammered by relentless outsourcing of jobs and capital.

Trump has a clear message: make America great again.

Notice that his message does not include making the 1% great by contacting communist chinese and socialist mexican labor at gunpoint for pennies on the dollar.

Not sure how establishment Pence is, since he’s Tea Party (I’ve heard).

Thought the same thing myself; feed disinformation to people you suspect are disloyal to you, and see what comes out.

Whom would you prefer Trump pick?
Just about anybody. I haven't heard a single good thing said about this guy. I'm sure he's not all bad, but what does he bring to the ticket?

You cannot have two members of the same nuclear family on the same ticket.

Keeping in mind that of all the GOP candidates, Trump not only can win, but more importantly wants to win the WH, Pence would be a smart choice.
With all his showmanship bluster, Trump doesn’t make stupid choices.

“First big decision from Trump, and he disappoints.”

Where have you been? He’s made tons of big decisions, and most have worked out very well for him.

Have you read any of the position papers he published? Have you witnessed his involvement in all manner of issues over the past 6-8 months?

He’s been in the thick of things, and crushing it, for a long, long time.

A couple of other advantages

He didn’t run in the primary so he has more of a clean slate with supporters of the other candidates.

The Turtle and Ryan can now have fantasies about impeaching Trump after the election so they(and their big donors) are more likely to support the ticket. It isn’t going to happen but they can still delude themselves.

Rand would have been a more interesting choice.
