Theresa May has become Britain's next Prime Minister after Andrea Leadsom withdrew from the Conservative leadership contest.

The energy minister has paved the way for Home Secretary Theresa May, as the only remaining candidate, to become Tory leader and Prime Minister.

David Cameron has phoned Mrs May to congratulate her and the new PM will make a statement at 5pm.

Mrs Leadsom said: "The best interests of our country inspired me to stand for the leadership. I believe that in leaving the EU a bright future awaits, where all our people can share in a new prosperity, freedom and democracy...

...David Cameron says he will go to see the Queen on Wednesday to tender his resignation with a "new Prime Minister...by Wednesday evening".

Cameron leaves after Brexit because he was a pro-EU Tory, and now his replacement is...another pro-EU Tory. So what was the point of Cameron’s resignation, exactly?

More or less true. But after losing the Brexit referendum Cameron’s position became politically untenable and he had to go. Britain’s parliamentary system does not cut much slack for leaders who end up on the losing side of great political/constitutional debates.

He lost a referendum on a major constitutional issue as the leader of his party and Prime Minister. In their system of government no Prime Minister could survive that. He had to go. May was also anti-Brexit but she has pledged to carry it out.

Theresa May was pro remain, was she not?

Also, why did Boris Johnson drop out of contention for PM so quickly?

it is confusing.

Cameron was a left-wing, one world, gay-loving “Conservative.”

So, is this new one even worse? Anyone know?

So what was the point of Cameron’s resignation, exactly?

Not familiar with the UK setup, but in the US, politicians make the big money AFTER they leave office.

Why have all the good conservatives step down and allowed this woman to have the job?

The same reason Paul Ryno is now speaker of the house. The better conservative candidates could not get enough votes from their peers, and upon realizing this through vote counting and lobbying, they dropped out.

I reckon the probability of the UK leaving the EU at about 50/50 right now.

Boris was the victim of one of the truly great political power plots (some have called it a bloodless political assassination) carried out by Michael Gove who pretended to be a supporter of Johnson right up until the last minutes when candidates for the Tory leadership could announce their bids. He then stepped in and announced his own bid and instantly doomed Johnson by taking about half of his supporters. Ultimately it was a Pyrrhic victory though. Overnight Gove became the greatest villain in British history since Richard III and he was crushed in the first round of voting.
