The real poverty in neighborhoods like that is poverty of character. Blacks treat each other worse than any white person would ever dream of. If you don’t know that, then you’ve never been within 50 miles of the “ghetto.”
During slavery, slaves were forbidden from learning how to read, write and do math. Families could be broken up at the whim of their owners. After slavery, being a good student, and having a solid marriage was a high priority of most blacks. And that was the case until the last part of the 20th century.
Today, there are large groups of blacks who are all for doing worse things to themselves and each other, than any old fashioned slave holder ever thought of being/doing!
They keep themselves completely uneducated, don't marry but reproduce, and are involved in doing/selling drugs, being tribal, by joining life killing gangs, have no respect for others or themselves, and are extremely easily swayed by others who lie to them.
There have been, since they gained freedom, millionaires and yes, billionaires, men and women who went to THE best colleges without the benefit of AFFIRMATIVE ACTION and other kinds of "special perks", and even most of the poor had solid marriages.
#BLACKLIVESMATTER hasn't a "valid" cause at all! They are just, yet again, a group of blacks creating worse lives to those, who follow them, than they'd have without them and causes trouble!
No, I am not black, but I know b lack history better than 99% of blacks do and I know what some black lives were like, from the blacks I went to school with and who were my friends.
And before you claim that I don't and never can understand what being a minority is like, oh yes I can! LOL
My parents were friend with a black couple and I was friends with their daughter. We all went to Patty's wedding and the 4 of us were almost the ONLY whites at the church and reception. Was I uncomfortable? No, not in the least! And no, that isn't the only example I can give you.

Yes, that's true, but most of the problems in the "black community" are self-inflicted as Freeper nopardons outlines:

And I'll add something you basically never see: the "hills community" people here in KY and elsewhere share a lot of the same traits and have most of the same problems and for the same reasons stated for blacks by nopardons.

OTOH, blacks once had more married couples than whites did, even though whites far outnumbered them, and cared more about education, than so whites did; so their fall is worse.

I’ve been reading and following Sowell since 1970; so I am very familiar with his work. I also have read, extensively, on this topic and have had my own experiences which have contributed to my opinions. :-)
