When Dallas police used a bomb-carrying robot to kill a sniper, they also kicked off an ethical debate about technologys use as a crime-fighting weapon.
In what appears to be an unprecedented tactic, police rigged a bomb-disposal robot to kill an armed suspect in the fatal shootings of five officers in Dallas. While there doesnt appear to be any hard data on the subject, security experts and law enforcement officials said they couldnt recall another time when police have deployed a robot with lethal intent. [ ]
If lethally equipped robots can be used in this situation, when else can they be used? says Elizabeth Joh, a University of California at Davis law professor who has followed U.S. law enforcements use of technology. Extreme emergencies shouldn't define the scope of more ordinary situations where police may want to use robots that are capable of harm.

"Goliath Tracked Mine"
You mean besides guns, mortars, scopes, night vision, aircraft, chemical weapons, nuclear devices etc?
Professor Joh should face what these policemen faced before even giving an opinion.

There were FReepers who brought up this issue as soon as the news came out.
OMG, what is that woman doing with that robot?????
I’ve heard about robots being developed for the bedroom. But all the stories I’ve read have been about robots designed for men.
What will we men do, if critical numbers of women are just as happy to snuggle up with their robot?????
All this talk about ethics . . . what about the robot? It gave its life.
Exactly. Dead is dead.
From what I've read in this particular case, the explosive was delivered by a small remote-controlled vehicle that is used by the Dallas bomb squad. This tells me that it's intended use is for a particular application where human officers would be endangered by explosives, booby traps, etc.
You just have to teach the robot to throw the bomb...

That happens every time a police officer uses deadly force, doesn’t it?
No.
There is no “cornered” in a parking garage where a perp who has already shot a dozen police officers can fire a gun at random in any direction and hit innocent bystanders blocks away.
LMAO.
"You're people are getting a bad rap.
By Asimov, I'll protect you, and give you up
when they take you from my cold, dead hands."
Sure. Take it back to any technological innovation since caveman days.
Nothing to talk about, you start killing cops, your going down, whichever way you want it...
An apt comparison IMO is “The Texas Tower Sniper” in Austin back in ‘66. He was rightly killed, a robot would have been an acceptable way to kill him.
Now if we find out that this man no longer was a threat to civilians and the police could be expected to know that and could wait him out without risk... Well, tThat’s a big assumption at this point- plus his claim to be able to set off bombs.

“...Local gun-owning citizens materialized and started shooting at the tower. A cop angrily demanded of one such public-spirited citizen what the hell he thought he was doing. The man, reportedly dressed in battle fatigues and with an M-14 rifle set up on a tripod, replied, “Just helping out.””
Ah, different times.
The Dallas used a robot intended to remotely detonate terrorist bombs when they are found .
They put their own explosive charge on the robot and drove it to the terrorist and detonated it
Yeah...Maybe they should have used a poison dart...
No wait, they should have used very harsh words and gestures to make the perp feel really bad about himself and commit suicide...
NO, NO, I got it..! They could have hired a witch and used a voodoo curse to turn him into a harmless frog...
Yeah, that's the ticket.../s
The same argument they use about Hiroshima & Nagasaki. Dead cops are preferable to dead BLM killers. Same as dead Americans were preferable to dead Japanese in 1945.
Because this was the first time technology has been used to take out a criminal or an enemy.

No different than using a drone, tank, or gun, IMO.
Obama,”if they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun”.
This loser brought a long gun and body armor.....
Okay, so he wasn’t cornered for the several hours it was that the police were hearing his demands, and negotiating for his surrender, and when he continued to stay where he was not cornered long enough, then they decided to be judge, jury and executioners.
