I was just talking about that with one of my managers earlier today. He was born and raised in the south side of Chicago, but managed to get out thanks to a football scholarship. He knew that he wasn't good enough to go pro, so he concentrated on his classes and got a degree in business management.

He's lived in rural Kentucky for the past fifteen years, and has no intention of ever going back to Chicago. If his folks want to see their grandkids, they have to come down here, for he refuses to put his wife and kids in danger by visiting the old neighborhood.

My family is from South Central Los Angeles. Being an Army brat, I only spent my teen years there, but that experience motivated me (and my siblings) to get the heck out of there as soon as we could.

I left for good over thirty years ago, and never looked back.
