Bump so I don’t lose this: an unprovoked sudden severe attack (knocking a tooth out) against a white person after saying “I hate white people” is ruled by a judge in Calgary, Canada as not a hate crime.

Related: attack in a (gay) nightclub while saying “Allahu ackbar” and with multiple mentions of ISIS that are recorded in 911 calls (after having been known for the past decade at least to make similar comments that were duly reported to the FBI by LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS) is not related to Islam.

It is, rather, the fault of guns, white testosterone, and Christianity.

There are several sets of rules in the Western democracies. For violations of national security: in the case of the high ranking, you skate (Clinton); in the case of the not so high ranking, you are convicted of a misdemeanor (Petraeus), for the lowly, you receive long prison terms (Pollard, Manning). On so-called hate crimes, one standard (guilt before conviction) applies to whites, Christians, males, and heterosexuals, another standard (innocence assumed) for all others.

I must wonder if even Trump can clean things up in a seriously broken legislative, judicial, and administrative system that has been built up since the New Deal. He is, humanly speaking, our main opportunity for reform.
