Muslims didn't even complain. Wegmans was just afraid that they might: "The associate further added that - the store had Muslim workers, 'my employees may not know what this stands for, Ex-Muslims of North America, and I don't have enough time and people to educate them on what it is,' and although they were not sure if the employees would be offended, they 'can't put them in that situation.'"
Of course, Wegmans. To put them in the situation of getting offended would be absolutely intolerable. No one should ever have to live with the fact that somewhere else, some people who believe differently are enjoying a cake. Cakes should always be denied to anyone who might somehow be offending Muslims. To allow such people to enjoy cake could turn out to be a mistake of explosive proportions.
So now Christians are forced to bake gay wedding cakes, but "Islamophobic" cakes? Everyone agrees they're beyond the pale.
"Apostates refused service at Wegmans bakery - fear of invoking offense led to discrimination, says Ex-Muslims of North America," Ex-Muslims of North America, June 20, 2016:
Wegmans, a chain of 89 grocery stores, refused to bake and decorate a cake for a private celebration for those who have left the faith of Islam.
The request included a picture of the Ex-Muslims of North America (EXMNA) name and logo, with a caption of "Congratulations on 3 years!", but was refused by an associate from the Fairfax branch of the popular chain, stating that the request was "offensive".
Apology accepted Wegmans
Post of the day!
I ordered a sheet cake and they asked what I wanted it to say. I said I wanted it to say Happy Birthday.
They suggested I add to that because of all the open space on the cake. I thought about it for a minute and said put you're not getting older at the top and add you're just getting better at the bottom.
And they did. When I picked up the cake, it said ;
at the top
You're not getting older at the top
in the middle
Happy Birthday
at the bottom
You're just getting better at the bottom
Thanks for finding that!
I believe it to be an important component of this episode because it appears (I’m giving them credit here) that the actions of those employees did not comport with the official policy of the company.
New store opened in the area recently. Huge store with everything. So sad, no more.

Wegmans Apologizes for Refusing to Bake Cake for Ex-Muslims

I frequently go to the Wegmans in Woodbridge, VA.
Their excellent bakery department has a number of Muslim women employees (complete with headscarves). I imagine the same applies 15 miles up the road in Fairfax. That’s probably where the offended Muslim baker angle comes from.
As for knowing, the requested cake design incorporated a logo of the organization.
Still wrong to refuse to bake the cake. (Better not pull that stunt in Oregon or the state EEO Nazis will be all over you!)
Has anyone come up with a meme for this cake phenomenon? Seems that every controversy winds up with cake story sooner or later so there should be a name for it. Cakecceptance or Cakefusal perhaps? Or how about bakery justice or bake court?
That’s hilarious!
