Apparently the intruder was alone in the house when the mother and kids walked in. The house had been vacant a while before she moved in, with squatters being a nuisance.

This may be a case of simple trespassing or a cracked-out derelict going into a (unlocked?) dwelling looking to crash.

So what if it was? It's her home and he was an intruder. She was entitled to assume he was a threat to her and her kids.

I think you are probably right that it might have been a derelict coming back to their former squatting location. It struck me that most people quit doing burglaries and home invasions before the age of 59.
