The Russian Project 1241 class R-32 missile corvette has been handed to Egypt, RIA Novosti quoted Russian Navy spokesman Viktor Kochemazov as confirming on Saturday.
The warship will help Cairo counter terrorism not only on land but also at sea, Kochemazov said, without elaborating on when the vessel was delivered to Egyptian Navy.
In August 2015, it was reported that the Egyptian Defense Ministry said that they received the R-32, equipped with the Moskit missile system. The Ministry said at the time that a group of Egyptian sailors and engineers will be sent to Russia, where they will be trained ahead of being stationed aboard the R-32.
The Project 1241 ships are a class of Soviet missile corvettes which have the NATO reporting name Tarantul.
Gee, isn’t it interesting that Egypt is taking delivery of the Mistral ships that France originally built for Russia — and now Egypt is taking delivery of ships built by Russia? Good gosh and golly, I wonder if maybe in a half a year or so the Egyptians might decide they really don’t need the Mistrals after all, and sell them to Russia.
Folks, Obama has set our Middle East policies out the window. Now the Russians have moved into all the gaps left by a asinine US policy shift.
The years 1948-2008 were years where the US did EVRYTHING in its power to keep the Russkies OUT of the Middle East. Now it's all over there, well except Israel. Obama continues to bully Israel while she is the only real ally left in that region of the world. It's no wonder Netanyahu is meeting with Putin time and time again. There is no other superpower “player” in the Middle East anymore, just Russia.
Not following your logic. Why would Russia give it to them and then buy them back.
Egypt has to feel very insecure withou the US on its side, as do many other ex allies.
He’s a worthless piece of #### and it’s not going to take overnight for Trump to get that trust back.
Would you?
Trump can get Israel’s trust back in 5 seconds... the Arab states? Not so sure...
So, do you start that thing with a key?
Does it come with a remote so that you can unlock the doors as you're walking up to it, or beep the horn in case you can't remember where you parked it?
I am talking about the Mistral helicopter carriers France built for Russia. They called off the deal when Russia stomped over Ukraine and Crimea. France sold the ships to Egypt. I think they just took delivery of one. But those are big ships, expensive to operate, and not really needed by Egypt, so I was wondering that that was all about.
Now, lookie here, Russia starts supplying new corvette class warships, perfect for operations in the Med, the canal, etc. So, what’s that all about?
My theory is that the Egyptians will sell the ships to Russia because they don’t give a fig about the Ukraine, Russia pays Egypt, Egypt pays France, Russia gets the ships it ordered, everyone is happy.
That is very interesting. Very interesting indeed.
That was pretty sharp man. I wouldn’t figure that out in a thousand years :)
The Russians love Corvettes, and have dozens of them. Heavily armed offensively for their size and handy, but short ranged, light defensive armmament and not good in heavy seas.
Nothing a couple F-18’s couldn’t dispatch quickly to the bottom.
What do they know that we don't.
