Pope to Armenians: Never forget the genocide, but reconcile

The world should never forget or minimize the Ottoman-era slaughter of Armenians, Pope Francis declared Saturday even as he urged Armenians to infuse their collective memory with love so they can find peace and reconcile with Turkey.

Turkey, though, didn’t budge. In its first reaction to Francis’ recognition of the 1915 “genocide,” Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Nurettin Canikli called the comments “greatly unfortunate” and said they bore the hallmarks of the “mentality of the Crusades.”

Francis began his second day in Armenia by paying his respects at the country’s imposing genocide memorial and greeting descendants of survivors of the 1915 massacres, who have been emboldened by his comments upon arrival that the slaughter of Armenians a century ago was a planned “genocide” meant to annihilate an entire people.

Francis presented a wreath at the memorial and stood, head bowed, in silent prayer before an eternal flame as priests blessed him with incense and a choir sang haunting hymns.

“Here I pray with sorrow in my heart, so that a tragedy like this never again occurs, so that humanity will never forget and will know how to defeat evil with good,” Francis wrote in the memorial’s guest book. “May God protect the memory of the Armenian people. Memory should never be watered-down or forgotten. Memory is the source of peace and the future

It is good to forgive, but nothing wrong with a long memory either.

The only way to prevent another Armenia type genocide, unfortunately, is to eradicate islam from the face of the Earth

Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Nurettin Canikli ... said they bore the hallmarks of the “mentality of the Crusades.”

He says that like it's a bad thing.

Maybe it should be the other way round pope - Turkey needs to ask forgiveness. I have a news photo of one of the atrocities they did but in consideration I choose not to post it.

Islamomania erased the Zoroastrians, the Armenians, and the Greeks from Turkey. Muslims continue to seek the complete annihilation of the Jews.

And then the next death cult comes rolling through accompanied by another massive pile of bodies. Islam certainly wasn't at the heart of Germany's efforts, nor Russia's, nor Cambodia's..

I think Israel has shown the only truly effective defense against genocide - a well trained and armed populous who are willing to use their defenses rather than waiting until it is too late.

It’s what they should have said. I forgot that there were so many low-IQ literalists out there.

Had a link , on my old computer, to a site with photos of mooslim atrocities. Horrific.

One photo was of the Armenian Christian genocide.

Scores of Christian teenage girls crucified in the desert.

Oh, and if you post it on some social network it’d be considered hate speech against mussies and Turkey. Can’t be offending the mussies you know.

This is the first time this Pope said the word genocide to describe this factual Muslim genocide of Christian people that occurred in the 20th century. One million Christians were massacred by Muslims, and they still refuse to accept what they did as wrong. ‘Who remembers the Armenians?’

Unlike the West which constantly reminds the world of its own great and many sins it has committed throughout history, Islam does none of it, in fact they believe their history is perfect. They will never admit to wrongdoing. That is why the Muslim idiot in the article said the Pope ‘sounded like the Crusades’ - not really. They were a thousand years ago and were wars of defense, not wars of imperialism.

Muslims under the Ottoman Caliphate, have a nexus to ISIS. It is the new Caliphate, and they are likewise murdering Christians, like the previous Caliphate.

The Pope should keep saying it.

He should remark on the 40 Christian churches that have been firebombed in Egypt, and Christian homes that have been put to the torch. Obama never says a word, because “the future does not belong to those who slander the Prophet.”

Muslims are undeniably horrible to all other religions everywhere they are on the Earth. That politically incorrect statement is never mentioned in the media!

Just a minor correction: it’s actually the second time Pope Francis called it “the Armenian genocide”. The first time, the Turks withdrew their ambassador for ten months.

Which has got to have its upside...
