He has been another low life loser for years. Never understood why people praised him so much. There are a hundred others waiting to take his place on the field.

What an absolute waste of a great player. I hope he can clean up his life before the drugs eventually take it.
It would have to take a heroically rubber-room upbringing that never hears about the possibility of a drug or alcohol etc.
Once the possibility to sin is heard about, the moral choice to seek or to refuse to seek is unavoidable. Even the bible does not hide the danger.
Hard to do it when your son is a multi-millionaire. Once the money runs out he might be able to, but until then, it’s Johnny’s show.
I am not going to act like a hypocrite though. If you dumped 10 million dollars on me when I was 23 years old, I might have wound up six feet deep. Some people take longer to mature than others. I know a 21 year old that could handle a million dollars and a 52 year old man that would kill himself from a drug overdose in less than six months if he was cut lose with a million dollars.
If his parents failed him they will live with it. Drugs are almost never a solitary form of destruction. Other people live with the addiction and results.
Johnny is a selfish fool who apparently needs to hit bottom before he has to get fixed. That is unlikely to happen until he runs out of money and co-dependent enablers.
The thing is, he wasn’t that great. He had one good year at A&M where the ball bounced his way in every imaginable way possible. He was in an offense that catered to his lack of hight and decision making. Once he got to the NFL, he actually had to learn a playbook and put in the work. That was something he wasn’t prepared for.
Exactly. Once the money’s gone, the posse will be gone, and the girls will be gone. He’ll have no one left to turn to but his family or criminal activity to support his habit.
He had skill and strength and power, he played well, probably understood the game even better than some coaches did. The story was not entirely one of vice, though it was of virtues misused.
In the bible we read the story of supernaturally strong Samson, who let a woman’s whining get to him in the end. His crowning heroic act ended up being a kamikaze act as well.
It is sad. We don’t live in rubber rooms, we can’t head off every possible vice.
This seems a textbook case of needing to get right with the Lord. The Lord allowed him to do as well as he had, but he has to put it all under the right management if he wants to head off a downfall. I pray that will happen.

No rubber room is needed, the only thing that is needed is self control.
As for faith, there are junkies who have accepted Jesus, and there are atheists who have never done drugs.
As for recovery programs, some people do better in a faith based recovery program and others do better in a more secular program.
Sometimes a bottom can manifest through earthly circumstances, and sometimes through moral realization before God. Sometimes several bottoms have to be reached.
We need to abandon the idea of a set-and-forget life on a self willed cruise control as it were. Life was intended by God to be a dynamic relationship between a person and God. God constantly thinks about the person; it is unseemly for the person not to attempt to return the favor.

He could try what Carroll O’Conner did with his son. Of course, Mr. O’Conner’s attempt failed but this father could try. There is yet another course of action.
“Good luck” literally put with “secular” plans. They are based on pride, which remains a fragile thing.
At the very least he can get on his knees and pray.

The light of God is what matters, and the best lesson of all for a child is not to extinguish or grieve that light, but to the contrary keep on endeavoring to embrace it. And parents do very well to live that example out.
Now one feature of this light is that it will forgive; in fact it has a patience beyond any human’s. Because it can see the big picture. A foundation may need decades to rebuild in some cases, but the result may be an imposing castle and worth it.
Abusing drugs doesn’t make you feel better. Mostly, they make you feel nothing, or they make you feel different enough that you can ignore your life. When you sober up, your life (now even more screwed up) is still waiting for you. Some abusers hate the way drugs make them feel. But they’d rather do that than face their lives.
