The US has been warned about its high poverty rate in the International Monetary Fund's annual assessment of the economy.

The fund said about one in seven people were living in poverty and that it needed to be tackled urgently.

It recommended raising the minimum wage and offering paid maternity leave to women to encourage them to work.

The report also cut the country's growth forecast for 2016 to 2.2% from a previous prediction of 2.4%.

Slower global growth and weaker consumer spending were blamed.

I found the below excerpt in this Huffington Post article.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/susan-blumenthal/poverty-obesity_b_1417417.html

Only a liberal could profess a surreal vision where people in poverty are also obese. Thank heavens my mind remains sufficiently healthy it can still reject such concepts.

"To address this health crisis, attention must be focused on a key issue that lies at the core of the epidemic: the social inequities of obesity. A significant body of scientific evidence links poverty with higher rates of obesity. Findings from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), the most comprehensive study conducted thus far to document the nutritional status of the U.S. population, has found that low-income children and adolescents are more likely to be obese than their higher income counterparts [4]. Additionally, reports have shown a higher prevalence of obesity among low-income adults. One study revealed that more than one-third of adults who earn less than $15,000 annually were obese, as compared to 25 percent of those who earn more than $50,000 a year [5]. Visually, a compelling correlation emerges when comparing maps detailing poverty and obesity rates in the U.S."

People that are poor can be obese for lots of reasons. The very first one is they can only afford carbs, which will fatten you but nutritionally that is all you get from it,fat.ESPECIALLY if they are actually disabled and can’t burn it off.
There are people that are fat from this but it also contributes to a host of illnesses nutritionally related so then you have to end up paying for ER and hospitalization to boot.
Then there are medicine side effects which cause horrific weight gain, like prednisone, I have severe Rheumatoid Arthritis and i’ve tried everything to control it, the only thing that makes a dent is prednisone. It put 45 pounds on me in a matter of 2 months. The alternate is just laying in bed screaming in agony as my joints are being ripped apart for somebody to kill me.

I’m very conservative, despise liberals but from my point of view the people that I have seen that had EBT cards weren’t driving escalades or had furs and gold bling. I had an ebt card when I got bedridden when I first got RA, after I wasted 30,000 dollars on biologic infusions to slow it down.. A whole 68 dollars to live on for 30 days.I qualified because I had zero income and by then zero savings. live on 68 bucks a month and see if you don’t get fat. no cheating, clear your cupboards empty from salt. pepper, cooking oil, any spice or a single veggie. You’ll be shocked. lots of ramen noodles mac and cheese, beans and rice. forget meat or real cheese. you’ll be lucky to make it to salt and pepper.oh and no paper products or tinfoil or anything pre-prepared. not even soap. try to live on that.

A poor person from a foreign country once said “I want to go to the United States where the poor people are fat”.

Poverty stats are bogus. They do not count non-cash government benefits when considering income. People are getting “free” or subsidized housing, food stamps, government schools for the kiddies, meals at school for the kids even during the summer, medical care, earned income tax credit, utilities including internet and home phone, and even a cell phone and none of this is counted as income. They could also be making some money they report (plus some they don’t) and still be included in the poverty category. It’s a giant scam!

Nobody in the US is going hungry unless their parents are neglecting them and/or selling the food stamps for drugs, or they are homeless people with addictions and/or mental health issues.

Add to all the government programs, there are thousands of food pantries, charities, giveaways of everything from fans in the summer to blankets in the winter and school supplies for the kids. BTW, why do people need new blankets or fans every year? I still have blankets from decades ago.

Surveys show that most “poor” people in the US own homes and cars. Every time I watch the show The First 48 and they show people in housing projects I see lots of expensive tattoos, gold teeth, elaborate fake nails, expensive sneakers, luxury SUVs, and pricey clothing. I am sick to death of the poverty industry perpetuating the myth that there are starving kids in the US. BS!
