WASHINGTON U.S. Rep. Steve King introduced an amendment in Congress that would have prevented Harriet Tubman, an abolitionist and supporter of women's suffrage, from replacing President Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill.
However, the House Rules Committee agreed Tuesday night to deny floor consideration of proposal, which would have prevented the Treasury Department from spending money to redesign paper currency or coins.
The Iowan Republican's amendment, which was first reported by the Huffington Post, would scrap the federal government's plans to replace Jackson on the $20 bill with a picture of Tubman, a black woman who was born in to slavery in 1822 and later escaped. She subsequently made repeated missions on the Underground Railroad to rescue black people from slavery. During the Civil War, she served as a Union Army scout and spy.
"It's not about Harriet Tubman, it's about keeping the picture on the $20," King said Tuesday night, according to Politico, pulling a $20 bill from his pocket and pointing at President Andrew Jackson. "Y'know? Why would you want to change that? I am a conservative, I like to keep what we have."
Politico quoted King as saying it is "racist" and "sexist" to say a woman or person of color should be added to currency.
"Here's what's really happening, this is liberal activism on the part of the president, that's trying to identify people by categories and he's divided us on the lines of groups.
This is a divisive proposal on the part of the president and mine's unifying. It says just don't change anything."

Jackson is on the $20 as he was a highly respected leader.
Liberals will have their fun as their Republicrat pals are anxious to accommodate them. I wouldn't have been surprised if Harvey Milk hadn't been proposed to grace the $20. Light in the Loafers will probably propose that next.
Harriet Tubman was a gun-toting Republican. Embrace the humor of it. If Harriet Tubman were replaced by another bad choice, it would probably be someone who supported their agenda.
Republicans hold majorities in both the House and Senate, do they not?
The libs should be hit with that every time. Clara Barton wasn’t even considered-Really.
Frankly, I think putting people on currency is a bad idea. We should go back to artistic renderings of lady liberty or other ideals. The money in the nineteenth century was beautiful art.
Also, while we are at it, stop naming Navy ships after politicians born in this or the last century. Navy heroes or Marines, yes. Politicians, no.
Unfortunately, conservatives are a minority within the majority.
Harriet Tubman was a criminal, a felon
she deserves no place on money
Want a black American on a bill? Fine. Make the case for Crispus Attucks. Want a female American? Fine. Go to bat for Mary McCauly. Want a disabled American? Then champion Joseph Kerr.
Plenty of people to go around, and should we run out, then recycle some of the wonderful coinage of the past that feature eagles and allegorical personifications of liberty in the classical mold which would have been appreciated by the founders.

And who controls the House Rules committee?
putting her likeness on the $20 bill (probably the 2nd most popular paper currency behind the $1 bill) is the worst form of pandering to SJWs and their fixation on identity politics.
she’s BARELY even a footnote in US history. i can think of 500 people more worthy of a spot on that bill than her. i can think of other women more worthy. i can think of other black Americans more worthy.
the fact that ~50% of the population thinks that this is a good idea - or even worse, that it’s a JUST idea - makes me mourn the loss of my country.
USA, 1776-2008. RIP.
The only “crimes” she committed were against laws enforcing human slavery. Breaking those laws was and remains a moral act.
She is a much better choice for money than a President who broke the law and stole the legal property of the people of the Cherokee nation.
If you want to see an artistic rendering of Lady Liberty, best to admire an old silver dollar. If it were done today, the thoughtmasters would probably use Bruce Jenner as a model!
Interesting. I can find nothing showing she was convicted of a felony.
As others have pointed out, she was a gun-toting Republican.
Can you send me something (website) where it discusses her arraignment and felony charges?
She was a stand up and fight for freedom Republican while Jackson was the first modern Democrat - drunken greedy murderer and financial imbecile.
the current jihad against the memory of Andrew Jackson smacks of soviet style erasure of out-of-favor appartchiks from the history books.
i saw somebody in another thread refer to the trail of tears as our own little bataan death march. what complete nonsense that is.
you cannot judge the actions of historical figures using modern contexts. Jackson was a lot more nuanced than the caricature that is being presented of him.
the leftist native rights movement of the 60’s and 70’s has attempted to reframe ALL interactions between European settlers and native tribes as ones of oppression and genocide. i honestly expect better of freepers than to fall for that boloney.
I kind of like ths one;

There was a huge step down in art and culture when they put FRD on the dime.
