Brexit live: David Cameron to step down over EU referendum result

Quote from Cameron

I was absolutely clear [in the referendum] about my belief that Britain is stronger, safer and better off inside the European Union. And I made clear the referendum was about this and this alone, not the future of any single politician, including myself.

But the British people have made a very clear decision to take a different path and as such I think the country requires fresh leadership to take it in this direction.

I will do everthing I can as prime minister to steady the ship over the coming weeks and months. But I do not think it would be right for me to try to be the captain that steers our country to its next destination.

This is not a decision I have taken lightly. But I do believe it’s in the national interest to have a period of stability and then the new leadership required.

There is no need for a precise timetable today. But in my view we should aim to have a new prime minister in place by the start of the Conservative party conference in October.

Turkey won’t join the EU — Greece and Cyprus have veto rights and even then, Erdogan doesn’t want to join the EU.

Exactly right. My point is that if that over centralisation could be contained, or broken up, then most of the anger Scots feel would dissipate. Unless Gibson makes another lying crappy film.

hmmm.... but the devolution since the 90s has only made the scots want more. Your theory makes sense, but 1. this has already been done and 2. this was done too late — it should have happened in the 50s.

Well I certainly agree we should never have let the domination of London get this far. It would have been better to have dealt with it fifty years back, because each year since the poison has gotten deeper and deeper and it becomes harder and harder to treat. In which case the sooner we act on it the better.

Its not just political and economic power, its the cultural power that goes along with it. You can have a multimillion pound business anywhere in the UK, but if its not in London, it will simply not be taken seriously. Londoners consider anything outside of London as being basically sub par, from organisations to people. The reasoning seems to be that if you were any good, then you'd be in London. But youre not, therefore you are second rate. It's that ungodly condescending attitude that is at the heart of it.
