Northern Ireland is part of UK isn’t it?

It is; but when you say merely "Ireland", general usage understands that to mean the Republic of Ireland, the large southern part that fought a bloody revolution to become a separate nation from the UK. When referring to the northern part of the island that belongs to the UK, general usage is to say "Northern Ireland."

Sort of like the way we never just say "Dakota" or "Carolina".
