These guys were felons, how did they get a gun? Lawbreakers will always get guns, law abiding citizens are the ones that suffer.
He might be fortunate that he didn't expire the 2d fleeing felon...the threat had passed and there could be a question as to his right to use deadly force. In any event:

I was wondering about that - whether the other criminal would face murder or manslaughter charges for participating in a crime in which a person died. I expect the laws on this vary from state to state.

The law can get confusing, and here in Washington state the police are more restricted than citizens when it comes to killing someone. The ‘common law” idea of shooting a fleeing felon is okay. But there was some case where the cops shot someone fleeing that didn’t pose any imminent threat, and the ruling said it was unlawful.
Not all states have changed their laws, and as I said - that was more related to the police. (Something like shooting them in the back was an unlawful “search” as per the 4th Amendment.)
I’m guessing that this brave kid will be just fine. Although in Washington state there have been a few prosecutors that try to make a name for themselves prosecuting cases like this, but it is rare. So far they have failed, but I can’t imagine at what cost and time and emotional turmoil for the innocent victim.
Add felony murder to the list.

Some states had(have?) laws stating you may shoot a fleeing person if he is a threat to others.I’d say by shooting at the boy the thugs established their target status.
