Terrible but under LBJ, there were two even worse incidences:

1. On June 8, 1967, US Navy intelligence ship USS Liberty was suddenly and brutally attacked on the high seas in international waters by the air and naval forces of Israel. The Israeli forces attacked with full knowledge that this was an American ship and lied about it. Survivors have been forbidden for 40 years to tell their story under oath to the American public. On January 23, 1968, the USS Pueblo, a Navy intelligence vessel, is engaged in a routine surveillance of the North Korean coast when it is intercepted by North Koreans.

Every sentence after the first one is a silly lie. There have been 3 investigations. Israel has released audio tapes. Multiple members of the crew and the captain have spoken openly.
The only people hiding things are the National Security Agency, which has blood on its hands for ignoring a presidential promise to keep ships out of the area, and sending in the USS Liberty without telling Israel and without an escort.
