When Derrick DeAnda pulled up to a rollover car crash in Elk Grove, California, his first instinct was to do whatever he could to help. What he didn't expect, though, was to be billed $143 for his actions at scene of the crash.

*snip*

Weeks later, he received a bill from Cosumnes Community Services District first responders in the mail.

I’ll go tell my friends you said they’re liars. Oh....And just exactly WHY do you think it became necessary for those laws to exist, where they do, which is not Everywhere? That’s a rhetorical question, please don’t answer, I don’t like talking to pinheads.

City of Dallas (TX) immediately sends the account to an out of state collector - they don’t even bill their victims first. And, of course, the Fire Department is ‘out of network’ so the insurance pays almost nothing, and they can charge whatever they want.

If you care about someone, don’t call 911. You are just setting them up for some significant financial pain.

Just did!

You know what they say about our overpaid union fire fighters here in CA, “They eat till they’re sleepy, then sleep till they’re hungry most days at “the house.”
In our little CA town, they shop for food at the most expensive market in town, while a lot of us go to Trader Joe’s or Costco. They are disgraceful leeches.

Seinfield creators “jumped the shark” in that scene. Anybody else here see what’s wrong with that picture? Or am I the only one who has ever seen the inside of a jail cell?

The taxes for fire rescue are sky high, yet it still isn’t enough.

Mr. DeAnda, the hero, was evidently classified as a patient because he was examined by a medical team at the scene.

If you are stopped at a light, and somebody jumps out and washes your windshield, do you owe the somebody anything?

No toilet or sink and Elaine should not be in the same cell.

I watched that episode and it struck me immediately that they do not put men and women together. Toilet and sink too.

Some states mandate that if you’re a medical professional and you render aid at an emergency, you may be held to the standard of care to which you were trained and licensed.

This is, of course, an impossible standard. Physicians and nurses don’t carry all the doctoring stuff around with them, although a rapid initial assessment done by a real expert can save a life.

I don’t recall offhand which states do this. It’s very bad policy.

North Dakota passed a Good Samaritan law years ago to stop that very action. People were freezing to death because passing motorists were afraid of law suits.

It’s worse than that. The cell doesn’t have a lock. That just a box on the gate. Notice no bolt.

Perhaps in your state there are no Good Samaritan laws but they are in a number of states.

Of course the laws were placed in effect because there were lawsuits brought against health professionals who stop at accidents.

Local gov’t doesn’t care about the circumstances or the situation, all they see/process is completely in black and white. So I’m not surprised he got a bill. It was someone who was proverbially “just doing my job”. It still stinks, though.
