“Its economy is smaller than South Korea’s.”

Bold faced lie. The Russian economy is nearly twice South Korea’s.

Russian GDP: $2.097 trillion.
South Korean GDP: $1.305 Trillion.

CIA World Factbook,

Russian GDP $1.325 trillion (2015 est.)

South Korean GDP $1.377 trillion (2015 est.)

Russia does have nearly triple the population though.

Last I read Russia, the world’s largest country, had an economy the size of Italy.

Re: “The Russian economy is nearly twice South Korea’s.”

The data is a complete jumble.

The World Bank and United Nations report 2014 numbers, which precede the crash in oil prices and the Russian Ruble.

The IMF and CIA report 2015 numbers, which are wildly distorted because of the Ruble crash.

Even trying to make sense of it by using PPP numbers (Purchase Power Parity) looks crazy.

In 2015, Russia’s “Nominal” GDP (measured in Rubles) is less than one third of its “PPP” GDP, which is a huge difference.

You realize that Russia’s population is about 3x South Koreas’...the math is pretty easy. Just to be equal to South Korea their GDP would have double in size.

No where does the article mention that Russia is an oil and gas superpower.

The collapse of oil prices skews their GDP numbers big time.

They are having a real hard time, after oil prices, sanctions and currency collapse hit all at once. Oil prices have crept back up to $50, and are likely to creep up some more this year, and the worst seems to be over for the currency.

It is true that they are not ten feet tall, but this article seems to exaggerate. Pulau has a better university system? Please...

Your GDP for Russia seems to be from 2013. Oil was around $100 then and it is around $50 now.

Bold faced lie. The Russian economy is nearly twice South Korea’s.

South Korean GDP per capita: $25,977

Russian GDP per capita: $14,612

US GDP per capita: $53,042

See the list.

Consider the source. The Globe is one that published propaganda which would have us believe that the military itself (as well as everything from child discipline to traditional morality) is hardly necessary.
