He declared himself ISIS, in support of jihad. He was Muslim, shooting dozens of people while he declared it. He transferred his house to his brother, and bought his wife jewelry to enable its easier movement. IMO, homosexuality was present, but not the motivation for the mass murder, or he would have said so in the heat of the killing. He did not, though - instead, he declared jihad. And yes, mass murder is different from serial murder.
