If they carry this too far, which would be to even TRY to change the rules, they run the risk of the only Republicans being elected are Trump and those who vigorously support Trump.

Why? When it becomes obvious that establishment pols in both political parties are a party onto their own, Trump will get the "made as *ell" vote across the political spectrum. But "voting fodder" Republicans won't vote for a disloyal Republican for so much as dogcatcher.
