MI: Private Buyers Rescue Guns at Detroit “Buy Back”

Detroit Firearm Rescue Operation

On  Saturday, 11 June 2016, the Wayne County Sheriff and anti-Second Amendment activists held a gun turn in event at the Mathis Community Center.  The turn in was hyped by numerous local news media, providing free publicity for the event.  But the actual coverage of the event was remarkably free of any mention of the numerous private buyers who competed with the “buy back” organizers for the firearms that were brought to the event.

It may not have been hard to compete.  The gun turn in organizers only offered $50 for each gun turned in.  Any working gun is worth at least that.  From wxyz.com:

(WXYZ) – Thanks to a $25,000 donation, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office was able to buy back hundreds of guns from residents ready to unload.

No questions asked, $50 for a gun–that’s an offer the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office has made before, but this buyback was different.

You can see that quite a few decent guns made it past the private buyers to the turn in table.

None of the local news coverage mentioned the private buyers. I thought man bites dog was news. Not if it does not fit the agenda!

I’ve got a cheap .380 that’s broken and waiting for a turn in event.

The executives at the nearest grocery store to me are strongly anti Second Amendment. They have funded a couple turn in events. One executive made a pretty inflammatory comment about gun owners. Enough that they have not received a penny from my family since and we used to do most grocery shopping there.

I’ll bet the better stuff that was “bought back” wound up in cop’s own private collections.

If they really wanted to, they could seize on this as an example of the so-called “gun show loophole”. “No background check!”, “straw buyers!”, etc.

This would be a good way to pick up a gun or two, but no more than that for any one person. More than that and you might start looking like a dealer to both the media and the authorities.

Back about a dozen years ago they had a gun "buyback" in my community offering grocery store gift cards for $50 for each gun turned in. The only exception was for "assault weapons", where the reward was $500.

The funny thing was, the organizers of the buyback knew very little about guns, and the definition of "assault weapons" was pretty fuzzy.

One guy I know had a beat up SKS carbine with the folding bayonet attached, and that was enough to convince the organizers that the SKS was indeed one of those horrendous "assault weapons", and they gave him a $500 food gift card for it, no questions asked.

At the time, you could buy Chinese-made military surplus SKS carbines at the local gun store for $119. Once the word got out, those SKS's absolutely flew off the dealers shelves, then were taken directly to the "gun buyback" for a nice profit.

I liked the photo of a straight razor being inspected.
