They used their chance in the sun well, but the circumstances have gone - their rise happened from 1753 onwards when they defeated fRance, when the Spanish and Portuguese were weak, the Germans hopelessly divided and the Indians and Chinese under foreign rulers (the Mughals and the Manchu respectively). The time is gone -- just as Assyria will never be the premier Empire again, just as Portugal will never be a first-rate power again, England's time in the sun is gone. It was glorious, but it is over.
