I think “shot and killed” would convey the meaning best. Using “after” breaks the cause-and-effect chain.
For example, “Famous FReeper Tax-chick dies after eating mushrooms.” Did I die because the mushrooms were poisonous? Did I fall down the stairs an hour after eating the harmless mushrooms? Lightning strike? Vampire attack?

“After being shot” clearly only involves one victim. But “After shooting” leaves the reader wondering if it was maybe a ‘mass’ shooting. The headline was deliberately misleading.
