WSJ: Donald Trump Takes Risks on Guns, Gays Since Orlando Shooting
Wall Street Journal ^ | June 15th 2016 | REID J. EPSTEIN

Posted on 06/16/2016 7:36:26 AM PDT by MadIsh32

Donald Trump’s overtures to the gay community and policy proposals on gun control in recent days have unnerved and confused some would-be allies and put the presumptive Republican presidential nominee at risk of alienating core GOP constituencies.

Since Sunday’s mass shooting at a gay nightclub by a man claiming allegiance to terror groups, Mr. Trump has pronounced himself an advocate for gays and said on Twitter that he plans to meet with the National Rifle Association to discuss “not allowing people on the terrorist watch list, or the no fly list, to buy guns.” Democratic lawmakers and candidates are pushing legislation since the shooting aimed at restricting suspected terrorists’ access to weapons.

While Trump advisers have long said his nontraditional candidacy is appealing beyond typical GOP voters, Mr. Trump risks tamping down support from base voters and grass-roots activists who have long powered Republican presidential campaigns. In 2012, 78% of white evangelicals backed Mitt Romney, compared with just 21% for President Barack Obama. The latest NBC News poll showed Mr. Trump with support from 55% of white evangelicals.

If trump can’t even talk to the NRA without the entire party going nuts then we are probably doomed. and Clinton is going to take over the FBI in a silent coup, put conservatives on lists, and take guns away in any case. It's Trump or disaster.

People need to stop and think calmly and strategically. Trump could bulldoze the NRA’s concerns into the wide open like no-one else. He could be the best voice the NRA has ever had.

It’s all psywar. People need to take a deep breath and wait to see what Trump comes up with. Falsely making the terrorist murder of 50 Americans a gun control debate is REALLY what people should be upset about now.

The GOP establishment plan is all about fragging Trump right now. The GOPe plan was to have open season on Trump until the convention where they would “endorse” him so later they could claim it “wasn’t their fault” if he lost.

Orlando didn’t change their plans at all. Kasich and Cruz still refuse to get on the Trump train. How pathetic is that? If the murder of 50 Americans can’t change the never Trump agenda in the GOP then this political party needs to die. It doesn’t deserve to exist.

Libs threw the GLBT faction under the bus in favor of the ‘radical Islamist jihadist’ faction.

Any wonder that many GLBT are buying guns and defecting to Trump?

Trump had better tread carefully

Oh, c'mon. If he's willing to talk they dems have no excuse to bully in a law they write on their own, and Obama has no excuse to do something unconstitutional by Executive Order.

Trump has said ALL ALONG that he's willing to talk to people and strive to make good deals. He's also said he always keeps open the option of cutting off negotiations.

Exactly. Talking is necessary when one searches for answers and solutions. He’s not said ‘yes’. He’s not said ‘no’. He is listening (it is hoped) with the wisdom of Solomon in an attempt to find judgement. With God’s hand on his shoulder, he cannot fail.

Trump gets it. Sure, if someone gets on the no fly or terrorist list, they may be a danger and not get to buy a gun or fly BUT each list must have an appeal process as a person mistakenly or wrongly on the list should be able to get off the list. The is another fundamental right - due process. The individual learns about the listing when flying or gun sale is denied, as being put on is not disclosed to the person.

The current no-fly/terror watch list is kind’a like Animal House’s “double secret probation” since you don’t know if you’re on it!

Trump will make a deal. That is his forte. Those legitimately on a no fly lust should not have firearms. They should be given the reasons they are on the no fly list, unless that jeopardizes sources and National Security. In such cases, a judge can determine if the person has been unfairly placed on the list. We are all entitled to protection. We are all entitled to carry firearms. We are all entitled due process. There should be an acceptable point wherein all can agree. JMO

“Trump had better tread carefully.
No one knows who is on the watch lists, how they get on watch lists, how anyone can get off watch lists.
This is a slippery slope to everybody being denied firearms.”

I agree. There is no due process for this, no appeal, no nothing. If a “mistake” has been made, sucks to be you.

If Trump comes out in favor of "No Fly No Rights", as he seems to be doing, NO, I will not be voting at all.

What risk? The Dems have stupidly placed the issues before him on a silver platter. The NRA is not averse to talking about gun control, it's what they do, and in 1994 got blindsided by it. Similarly, it's no great stretch to state that Islamic terror has killed 50 gay people (probably not in actuality but close enough) which words the administration can't even bring itself to utter. This is a riskless outreach and Trump would be stupid not to make it.

He could blow it by buying into a new AWB, but I seriously doubt he's that stupid, and if he is that little talk with the NRA will disabuse him of the illusion. Which is another good reason for a conversation.

Trump could, and could have, split his constituency at any time by blundering on these issues. He hasn't. Let's hope he doesn't.
