Blood Donations Skyrocket, but Gay Men Left Out
NBC ^ | 6/15/16 | Emma Margolin

ORLANDO — Thousands of people have poured into blood banks or waited outside, melting in the mid 90-degree heat, since Sunday to meet an urgent call for blood donations after so much of it was spilled here on a nightclub floor. Many were sent home, having completely overwhelmed the staff and resources available to tap their veins. But for the community perhaps most affected by the horrific massacre, it was outdated regulations that kept them away.

"I want to be able to help my brothers and sisters that are out there, that are suffering right now," Garrett Jurss, a gay man, told NBC OUT. "But I can't, and I feel helpless."

Under the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) current guidelines, gay and bisexual men are required to remain celibate for a year before they can donate blood...

(snip)

The FDA justifies its policy by pointing to higher rates of HIV infection experienced nationally among gay and bisexual men...

(snip)

Gay and bisexual men, meanwhile, continue to press for their right to donate.

"It's insulting to a lot the LGBT population that this is still an issue," said Russell Walker, community development director of the AIDS organization Hope & Help. He has been directing LGBT friends who want to donate to OneBlood, despite the FDA regulations.

"Remember, you're celibate!" he called after one man on his way out the doors of the GLBT Community Center of Central Florida Monday. The two men laughed. But Walker soon grew serious again.

"There are so many outdated things we're fighting against," he said. "We're getting there. This is just another fight with a massive light shone on it."

This sounds like agitation by the gaystapo. I cannot believe most gay people would want to put their friends and family at risk.

The FDA 2015 report on why the ban should be kept notes that in Australia, which also has the one-year ban, over 99% of gay men comply with it. Here’s why:

“Of note, donors in Australia must sign a declaration in the presence of blood center staff that they understand that there are penalties, including fines and imprisonment, for providing false or misleading information. No such declaration is required in the United States, nor are donors advised of penalties for providing false or misleading information.”

And I agree with you on the narcissism in such thinking. It doesn’t seem to be just from gay men, though, to a considerable extent. Narcissism has been shown to be on the increase in college students over a 30-year period (with a decrease in empathy):

“The changes are highly significant statistically and sufficiently large that approximately 70 percent of students today score higher on narcissism and lower on empathy than did the average student thirty years ago.”

https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/freedom-learn/201401/why-is-narcissism-increasing-among-young-americans

Much of it seems to be caused by replacing Christian beliefs with secular humanism. Christian beliefs say that we’re all sinners, while humanism makes someone feel like they’re okay, but many other people aren’t.

And humanism teaches that there aren’t any objective standards of right and wrong, people should just assess a situation for themselves. If they “see no harm” to others, then it’s all right to do what they want and break laws and rules.

lol, I saw a rerun of that not too long ago. Most hilarious part is when he tells Edith that things might be different in the bedroom.

No, we certainly don’t. Something new could turn up, and the FDA cites that as a concern about lifting the ban on gay men:

“However, some have argued that a five-year deferral would, in theory, add a safeguard by allowing time for intervention against an emerging infectious disease that might spread rapidly among MSM and be transmitted through blood transfusion.”

The five-year deferral was rejected in favor of one year, but that is still better than what many gay activists want, which is just weeks, or no deferral at all.

The FDA makes the point that they can’t just rely on tests. And one reason is that they pool batches of blood together for testing, in groups of 6-16 donations (for cost and test accuracy purposes).

One bad donation will therefore ruin 6-16 donations. Too many bad donations will ruin a lot of blood, therefore.

Wonderful Scripture. We find new is God’s holy word every day and it becomes so clear what we must do. Go Trump!

All they have to do is have the Recipient or the Recipient's Family sign a Release saying they are OK taking Blood from a Homosexual.

Here's a question, how do they know the Donor is a Homosexual? Does the Donor swear on a stack of Koran's that they are Straight?

When my Leukemia came back with a Vengeance a few years ago, I had to have a series of Blood and Platelet Transfusions for an entire Month so I could keep breathing.

Six Months later my Oncologist gets a call from the Red Cross telling him that the VERY LAST Pint of Blood I received came from someone who had just come in to Donate again who had contracted Hepatitis C.

I ended up at an Infectious Disease Specialist and was tested. Luckily I tested negative, but nobody ever let me know how the “straight” Donor managed to contract Hepatitis C in the time period between his first and second (attempted) Donation.

And, after donating approx 2 gallons of blood over a 2 decade time span, I have not been allowed to donate in years because I visit Britain. Mad Cow risk, you know.........

Well actually animals do carry on in that way. Many times they mount each other to show dominance, regardless of sex, or for socializing in some species. Some pair-bonding animals make homosexual pair bonds.

But surely what happens among animals commonly or uncommonly is irrelevant.

Cannibalism, infanticide, theft, rape and coprophagy are also natural among animals, depending on the species, and might not be aberrant at all. None of that has anything to do with what is proper and moral for humans.

Why no mention of Hepatitis, which is known to be highly present among male homosexuals due to their, ah, “peculiar” sex practices?

It is a known blood borne pathogen.

Well boo hoo, that's too {expletive} bad. We are not going to compromise public safety for the sake of your feelings. (unless of course you're a liberal, then that sounds just fine)

You made choices, choices have consequences. Period, the end.

Interesting...

Liberals want to invite refugees where only a few percent MIGHT be terrorists that will kill Americans.

LIberals want to invite homosexuals where only a few percent MIGHT have HIV that will kill Americans.

I conclude liberals hate Americans and hate life.

Of course not a single one of them will house a refugee or give their child a blood transfusion from a homosexual.

I hope someone can explain this to me—I understand homosexual males are of high risk for “tainted blood.” However, surely we have the technology and medicine to be able to accurately test the blood before it is used. If not, doesn’t that cause concern for ALL blood!
