CHULA VISTA (CBS 8/CNS) - A shooting involving a federal law enforcement officer in the area of an Eastlake-area strip mall left one suspect dead Tuesday afternoon.

The gunfire in the 2300 block of Proctor Valley Road in Chula Vista was reported about 2 p.m. The shooting apparently involved a U.S. Homeland Security agent investigating some kind of illegal drug activity, Chula Vista police Lt. Ken Heinz said.

This can be confusing, but the investigations side of Immigration and Customs Enforcement rebranded a couple years ago to Homeland Security Investigations or HSI. Besides picking a three letter name that auto corrects to "HIS" they still do the same job they were doing before. They investigate criminal activity with connections to either crossborder activity or immigration crimes. That includes smuggling, human trafficking, child pornography and exploitation, etc.

I am guessing the Border Patrol shot a smuggler. That are is about 7 or 8 miles from the border.

Because they said homeland security agent, I am guessing it was HSI. Border Patrol usually gets identified as Border Patrol although there are a lot of task force offices with teams made up of both.

My cousin, who didn’t have kids, lived down there. Before the fence went up he would have herds of illegals running through his neighborhood at night.

I grew up near the intersection of Telegraph Canyon Rd and L St in Chula Vista. Left the family home in 1978 and purchased a condo near Hilltop and Orange. Sold that in 1983 in favor of a house in Mira Mesa (Manila Mesa). Sold that in 2000 and moved to Idaho. My dad passed in 2003. Mom sold the house in 2005 and moved out to Cottonwood (south of El Cajon). She passed in 2011. The area just doesn't look like the community I knew from 1963 to 1978. It has really gone in the toilet.

My son was living in a condo in Eastlake when the cartel murdered a kid just 100 ft from his front door on Feb 8th, 2008. I relocated him to my 2nd house in Idaho on Feb 15th, 2008. We're finished with the community.

My grandfather lived there for 60 years. He and my grandmother had a nice little bungalow with lime, apricot and plum trees. We didn’t get there often, but it seemed like a perfect place to live. That was 35-40 years ago.

I’m sort of glad he died when he did. I drove by there about 10 years ago, and where he lived is a stinking slit trench now.
