“I was somewhat confused as to the neocon definition.”
You can always read Irving Kristol’s writing on the subject. Irving is the ‘godfather of neoconservatism’ and William Kristol’s father.
The first generation neocons began as Trotskyites in NYC. Trotsky being the original leader of Lenin’s Red Army. So its roots are in communism and nothing American. They eventually became a cold war faction within the Democrat Party, which they left when they decided that the McGovern Democrats were too isolationist. Where Trotsky wanted to export world revolution, the Neocons want to export world democracy. Ergo their love for Dubya’s Iraq adventure.
What was your general impression, was he angry, resigned, stony faced or?
“This election has made it clear to me that I am closer to being a populist as opposed to a neocon.”
I would not accept the label ‘populist’ as it is an invention of the left designed to discredit the right.
By calling us populists they are suggesting that there is no substance to the movement, but merely popularity. They may as well call us “mere populists” or “panderers”
None of the names for the various political movements really do them justice. Conservative, liberal, progressive, socialist, neocon, libertarian. They are all just names, at first approximating a set ideas of ideas held by a group of people, and eventually becoming spoiled by misuse - both intentional and unintentional.
Populist isn’t even that - ‘populist’ is something one might more likely be called by one’s political opponent.
One day, we shall all have to account for what we did and what we said in this scoundrel year. For now, we each have our conscience to attend to.

That accounting will most assuredly take place. When that day arrives, you and all your fellow PC elitists will be the brunt of well deserved scorn and ridicule. Your holy than thou conscience has rendered you irrelevant in the real world we find ourselves in today.
I just call them leftists infiltrating the Republican party. The only one that truly fooled me was the fake one Mark Levin. The other ones I knew voted for Obama....twice.
The best way to control the opposition is to lead it ourselves. --Vladimir Lenin.
Kraut making an inapt comparison. Claiming the American people might pick a bad president (Clinton, Obama) is different than saying that the Republican party must accept the will of its voters. The Republican party is intended to be a reflection of its voters, not the denier of their will. If you don't agree with their choice, you are not a Republican.
“Populist isnt even that - populist is something one might more likely be called by ones political opponent.
Thank you for the information. From my study of American history, I have always associated Populism with the Peoples Party around the late 1800s. I never considered those people individuals wanting handouts, buy a fair shake which influenced Teddy Roosevelts Square Deal.
I did not realize it was considered a slur. Would that be similar to the Tea Party and the opposition calling individuals of the party teabaggers?
Many years ago I was in a managerial position in U.S. Civil Service for the Air Force and then the Marine Corps. While there I endured all of these wonderful statements but that did not prevent me from doing the job I was hired to do. I finally had enough of unprofessionalsm in all aspects of government management, productivity and downright knowledge to do the jobs they were hired to do...and quit and formed my own private business that I have to this day.
Even though I made upper and lower management hate me since I held them to the directives and regulations along with the requirements of their jobs, they gave me a huge going away dinner with lots of people and a beautiful plaque given by the Marine Corps which still hangs in my office.
Trump has the same traits as I've described above. Yes...he is a “bomb thrower” and all else mentioned and for once, he will use the talents to “whip” all under him to do what they are hired to do and to OBEY the laws written by our forefathers and of an earlier generation.
Thank you Donald Trump from taking the flack from the Republican leeches and “turncoats” to lead our country back to greatness in both economy and morality!
Charlie has gone all “Beck” on us....
Let this brief note be my expression of contempt for a charlatan. He is not worthy of more serious analysis--although I reserve the right to respond to anyone who wants to defend the clod.

That explains the absolute tone-deaf flop-sweat act by most of the am talking heads attacking Trump. I'm thankful I don't watch cable news that much, I'm sure it's far worse.
Staggerin I can still learn something in politics. Thank you (I think ;)) Let's hope with the Trump nomination, this spells the end of these leftist POS in the Republican party..
pseudo conservatives bump for later....
I didn’t mean to present myself as an authority. Your understanding of the historical connotations of these terms is as good as mine (or better, most likely!).
I am just an observer and I have gotten the impression that during my lifetime, calling a politician a populist is done to suggest that the appeal is purely emotional and not based on moral principles or rational thought.
In grade school, if someone had the reputation of seeking popularity, it was not a compliment; it meant they were shallow, fickle and probably would not have your back when you needed a true friend.
In the current context, there is a constant drumbeat of suggestions from the left that Trump’s appeal is emotional, fear based and that he says whatever he thinks people want to hear - that his supporters tend to be knuckle dragging, superstitious, racist cultists.
Nothing could be further from the truth. If anything, Trump says what he thinks without consideration of popularity or political consequences. His supporters are intelligent and open minded people who actually think for themselves.
To admit you are for Trump in a random group of people is an act of courage, not a way to become popular - at least here in Philadelphia’s northern suburbs.
When a #neverTrump pundit like Krauthamner says Trump is a populist he is really saying “not a conservative”.
He seemed absorbed in whatever story he was reading and oblivious to his surroundings. Maybe he was reading about Orlando.
Thanks!
