As a shooter/trainer, I’ve been asked “how could he shoot so many people so fast.” Look for the video of Keanu Reeves going through a 3-gun exercise. I can play whack-a-mole all day long with a red dot holosight, a good carbine and a couple of 50 round drums or C-mags, I’ve played “war” (Army, local training facilities, “walk in the woods” exercises, kill houses), but I’m not as fast as he is; then there are guys like Jerry Micalek who is blazingly fast.
So the real question is, where did this shooter train? Did DHS give him the training? Saudi Arabia, most likely (he has a travel history) - anyone remember how the IRA terrorists would go to Libya for training as guns were outlawed in Ireland? - there’s no evidence anyone recognized him from local ranges and 3-gun is a pretty tight community plus he “only” bought the guns last week.
That’s the kicker. He didn’t OWN any guns, did he? Or were those cleared out of his apartment (it was OPEN when the police arrived hours and hours later).
The big question is who trained him? But no one’s asking these questions out loud.

The original M-16 had a cyclic rate of 700+ rpm in full auto mode (If you had a 700+ round magazine and the barrel didn’t melt). The official semi-auto max rate was 45 to 60 rpm, IIRC.

There are a few people who can fire a semi auto very fast but they are rare. I am pretty slow but still as fast as I want to be.
I once saw a Texas Ranger who belonged to our gun club fire a Remington 870. He was so fast that I could not believe it. I suspect he was firing faster than most machine guns. Five shots in almost a continuous roar.
Those are the fully automatic AK-47s that all Islamists own as soon as they are old enough to walk.
