The average man with a full-time job in 2014 earned less than the average man in 1973 ... shedding additional light on the perceived economic stagnation and frustration among middle-income Americans in recent years.

...

the median earnings of a man working full-time in 1973 was $53,294 — measured in 2014 dollars — while the median income for a man working full-time in 2014 was $50,383.

“This one fact, tucked in Table A-4 of the Census Bureau’s annual report on income, is both a symptom of an economy that isn’t delivering for many ordinary Americans and at least one reason for the dissatisfaction, anger, and distrust that voters are displaying in the 2016 presidential campaign,” David Wessel, director of the Brookings Institution’s Hutchins Center

With all the variables in determining medians and inflation adjusted dollars, this difference is not meaningful.

They already know the answer. But, they declare that all wealth should be theirs and they don’t want to live in an America where employers have to compete for talent.

huh? it is meaningful. it shows - at the very least - that incomes and standards of living have not increased in 40 years. this is not progress, this is stagnation.

Meaningless. Note that it measures earnings, not compensation. Benefits aren’t included, so the picture is incomplete.

Some portion is related to the collapse of private sector union jobs - and that’s a good thing.

The writer is either ignorant or intentionally misleading. Either case is sufficient to draw many adherents around here.

Average Man With Full-Time Job in U.S. Earned Less in 2014 than 1973...

the median earnings of a man working full-time in 1973 was $53,294 — measured in 2014 dollars — while the median income for a man working full-time in 2014 was $50,383.

The average man is not the median man.

the inflation-adjusted earnings of the median female worker increased more than 30% between 1973 and 2014, to $39,621 from $30,182, according to census data.

Without intermediate data points, this statement cannot be proven true. I believe if you look at the data, the mid to late 1980's, the mid to late 1990's and the mid 2000's would all show better earnings than 1973. However, under Obama, all of those gains have been given back to the point we are now below 1973.

This is true, but what is left out is the after-tax income take-home pay. Taxes are far higher now than in 1973.

“Benefits aren’t included, so the picture is incomplete.”

In 1973 I had a defined-benefit pension and good medical. When I retired I had Obamacare and a lousy 401K. Some benefits.

You can bet total compensation is far lower. In 1973 people got benefits - including defined benefit retirement. Now. Ha.

Why would you think that economic stagnation (at best) is meaningless?

Can’t tell from the chart if this is adjusted for inflation. If it isn’t adjusted then it means earnings have dropped significantly. If it is adjusted then it means that earnings have stagnated.
