Long before Donald Trump made his first foray into Las Vegas real estate, I had an unsettling experience gambling in a downtown Vegas casino. The cards were falling my way until late at night, when I began making subtle mistakes. My stack of poker chips, once piled high, dwindled. Ahead a few thousand dollars at one point, I cashed out with little more than my original stake.
I slept fitfully, and in the morning called my father, who grew up in Nevada and is also a gambler, to relate the previous nights turn of events. He asked me a single question. Were you tired?
Yes, I said. I got up very early in the morning, traveled here, and played cards until after midnight.
That explains it, he said. You lost because you wanted to lose.
No, I said. I hated losing.
Of course you did, but your body needed sleep, he said. Your body knew that the only way it could get you to quit playing and go to bed is if you lost your money. Youre lucky you didnt lose everything.
That was how I learned how powerful our subconscious desires can be. All these years later, the episode puts me in mind of Donald Trump. Ive only met the man once, and if one of my friends wrote this column, Id tease him about going all Gail Sheehy -- I dont usually cotton to journalists who psychoanalyze their subjects. But I believe that Donald Trump, the man who famously disparages losers, knows deep down he isnt equipped to be president.
Lets call this more reflective subconscious entity Don Trump.

I gotta agree but, everytime Donald makes some statement that is “out there”, his numbers improve.
They guy knows what he is doing and just has an instinct for this.
All those “I”s and “my”s. Thought Obama was talking.
An ink stained wretch who gambles on lowly Fremont Street is going to straighten DJT out ! LOL, does this nobody see the irony?
Again.
Shoot! I thought your pop was gonna tell you
“You gotta know when to hold ‘em. You gotta know when to fold ‘em!
TRiUMPh
Donald sure as hell didn’t sound like that in calling out Obama and Hillary
The only major mistake Trump has made lately has been to APOLOGIZE for his statements about the judge. Had he held his ground, the internet would have quickly caught up and vindicated him. The judge is biased.
Trump’s statements today about Obama either being naive about Islam or secretly supporting ISIS are on the money. In a few days, regular people in the street will be asking themselves the question “why doesn’t he say it’s Islamic terrorism, when it’s so obvious?”
BTW, sleep is important. Not getting enough sleep each night has been shown to actually LOWER your IQ by as much as 10 points.
I watched a little of the video, this guy is full of it. He perfectly described Mrs. Clinton, the inserted the name “Trump”.
The response to his speech was underwhelming to the students assembled; with the exception of the BernOuts who applauded...
oops! posted to wrong thread. D’oh!
No matter what I say or how many articles I provide with factual information, they don’t buy it. They still think Hillary is the only one qualified to be POTUS because she has “experience.” The other comments I have heard is that Trump is not intelligent based on his usage of words in his book. I have not seen or read his book but that was the talk the other day. Finally, they can’t stand his hair.
Gamblers are psycho like alcoholics and homosexuals. No point in listening to the opinion of a psycho.
I think this writer of this article is a hamburger short a happy meal...
Trump is trying to find a way out of WHAT???
He really doesn’t get out much does he, probably doesn’t understand there are places that serve two hamburger patties in one sandwich.....does he realize there are actual human beings walking on sidewalks all over the World...does he know that at night the sky is dark and there are little blinking lights, and during the day that big bright thing in the sky is called a ‘sun’.....
My father told me about his experiences going through officer candidate training school in the US Army during WWII. One of the tough exercises they put them through was sleep deprivation over a period of about 3 full days and nights. During that time they were continually fed fictional battlefield status situations that required them to analyze the situation and make crucial decisions and commands that would win or lose the simulated conflict at hand, and potentially cause the loss of massive American lives. He was a very smart and tough individual, and despite that, he said it was amazing to review the script of the decisions he and his fellow officers made during that exercise. As sleep deprivation began to take its toll, the quality of judgment in their decisions went down dramatically.
What a barforama!
I don’t know who Carl Cannon is.
But after all these months, he still couldn’t figure out Trump, and why he gets support.
Like the media/academic circus, Trump got into their OODA loop rent free.
In any event, he's numb from the neck up and a waste of oxygen. Next?
The same was said of Romney.......
