Almost a half-million acres in southern New Mexico were designated as a national monument two years ago.
Now, members of the state's congressional delegation are pushing for portions of the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks area to be set aside as wilderness.
While praised by environmentalists, the effort is reigniting the concerns of local law enforcement about their ability to access the area to fight crime.
The legislation introduced by Sens. Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich, both Democrats, would set aside more than 376 square miles - or nearly half of the monument - as wilderness.

The Southwestern Border Sheriffs' Coalition - which represents more than two dozen local sheriff's offices from Texas to California - is reviewing the latest proposal.
Sheriffs along the U.S.-Mexico border say the influence of Mexican drug cartels, human smuggling and illegal immigration are all apparent. They're concerned about jurisdictional issues that prevent them from investigating local crimes that happen within the boundaries of national parks, monuments and federal forests.
Without concurrent jurisdiction, areas can fall prey to smugglers, said Donald Reay, executive director of the Texas Border Sheriff's Coalition, which is part of the larger sheriffs' group. He pointed to problems at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument in Arizona and Big Bend National Park in Texas.

To hell with “wilderness” areas. Make them free fire zones!

Agenda 21 marches on and nobody breathes a word about it. Amazing!
The Organ Mountains were once the impact area for Fort Bliss' antiaircraft firing batteries, and dud HE shells can still be found lying around in those mountains.
I hunted water caches back in the day of minutemen efforts ....... Flag stuck in a 55 gallon drum filled with 2 liter water bottles ...... 2 mags of cheap 55gr 5.56 later the illegals would “still” be thirsty when they got there......, drive trucks over the 55 gallon drums and make em flat and useless for the POS that was building these rest stops for the coyotes human trafficking efforts.
Organ Mountains is a popular rock climbing location. It overlooks White Sands Missle Range.
I say leave it like it is.
Our criminal government wants you off THEIR lands.
Yes, I know you’re correct.
I have no intention of giving up any of our farm, or my property.
Oh, you don’t have to waste good ammunition...dump clear liquid laxatives in them instead...

That should keep the drug dealers and trespassers out of that area. You know BIG signs in espanol so they will know not to enter.
I think its safe to say Udall and Heinrich are expecting to benefit from increased drug activity.
The Organ Mountains are not the area they are talking about. It’s the mountains southwest of Las Cruces and north of the Mexican border (north of county road A003). Without access by state or local officials, the drug smugglers essentially have freedom to take it over.

I was completely ignorant of this recent idiocy by Heinrich and Udall.
“I hunted water caches back in the day of minutemen efforts”
Thank you for your service!
Yeah, thanks for the ping. I hadn’t heard of it either. These sob’s just won’t quit.
Sorry, I misunderstood. I lived in Las Cruces once, for about 9 months.
Then moved to Silver City.
