Mitt’s father, Governor George Romney, did the same thing to Goldwater in 1964. When he made a failed run for the nomination in 1968 and ended up something like HUD Secretary, he had said he was “brainwashed” on Vietnam War by the generals. I remember at the time, Gene McCarthy said “Romney claimed he was BrainWASHED; a little light rinse would have been just fine”. Like father, like son.
