It is a question to be asked before God.

More and more people are singles, and those would be better risks even in the light you proffer.

The gag agreement would not bind their families and friends from talking.

And the bible does say that the wrath of God is manifest from heaven towards those who “SUPPRESS THE TRUTH IN UNRIGHTEOUSNESS.”

One sparrow does not make a spring. But when there are a million of them, you might want to check the calendar.

And certainly they can speak of the smoke even though they may not have been privy to the fire.

OK I think that’s swallows, not sparrows.

But God marks the sparrow’s fall.

A lot of these tragedies are precipitated by a worry-prone mentality. Japanese companies, at least until recently, were known for the oddball mentality of projecting where they might be in 500 years — not just next quarter.

That might be a bit ambitious for modern trends, but the point should be clear. Try to take a longer view. If you are worried about every little ripple and wave, it is guaranteed you will not be able to walk on water.

>>The classic monolithic career and retirement is ONE way to address the issue;

Even if you don’t do the classic 40 years and gold watch thing, people need to look forward to more than 2-5 years of employment and then a layoff, a year of waiting tables, then a new entry-level job that lasts another 2-5 years and then back to the restaurant or landscaping business or something.

You’re exactly right about the hair-trigger antsiness. The only time anyone ever thinks about the future anymore is when they are imagining some global climate change silliness. Everything else is so short-sighted that “next quarter” becomes long-term planning.

This is where the opposite of losing your religion comes into play.

Before we were employed by, say, IBM — we were employed by God. Whether or not we knew it.

Having worked as a contractor makes this clearer to me. God arranges for my pay; I’m contracted on various jobs, which I might do with greater or lesser success.

I just don’t have that kind of faith anymore. :-(

And I think people sometimes take stability of circumstances as too much of a must.

I might have avoided the severity of financial straits that I have had to weather, had I been willing to put myself on the road a lot sooner, when I could bankroll over more of the problems. Hitting “Road Closed” signs has a way of slowing progress.

And the contractor model is one that will probably flourish more in the near future. It makes the business risks smaller. What makes H1Bs smile isn’t necessarily something that can’t make you smile too. People even kind of admire the career cowboy.

You can, if you are willing to grunt out the patience to deal with some lean circumstances for a while.

Even in the worst case, it can’t be hidden from God by any earthly pact.

What goes around has a way of coming around.

Why do you think?

I’m in traffic 10 hours a week and my “fellow citizens” are the most self-absorbed, conceited, arrogant, hateful people I’ve ever come across.

This country won’t last 10 more years.

Modern auto traffic has a way of bringing out bad manners.

But even there, it varies from place to place.

Folks are not as rude in Omaha, Nebraska as they are in New York City — in fact sometimes they are downright polite.

And, if everything kept up according to this trend, the country would probably fly apart spiritually.

But God plays the trump card, the Ace who went to the Hole, and can change the game dramatically.

Don’t look at wind and waves when the objective is to walk on water.

I’ve noticed driving in liberal areas the mood is nicer and more “chill”.

In red states, folks are crazy. I say that as a Conservative too. It’s surreal.

those attributes are common of urban dwellers. I worked in NYC and lived in Long Island for one year. It was a two hour commute each way. The people in the neighborhood were great. Away from the neighborhood they were just as you describe.

I live in a small city now and the people are just the opposite. Good folks, considerate, friendly, courteous, etc. I hate to even visit a big city today.

I work in IT and have seen this up close. It is one reason I chose to take a civil service job after 20 years in private industry (and nothing to show for it).

I can’t tell you how many people do not know about this issue. In fact, my sister in law, who works in a federal healthcare job, all but called me a liar when I explained what employers did. She said, “That cannot be possible.”
