An argument can be made that it only drives people who might choose differently further into the culture and lifestyle; because they’ve been ‘pegged’.

Because Christians are notorious for holding a grudge in spite of repentance :-/

The fact that one would go "further into the culture" makes your contention "they might choose differently" simply absurd. The argument is flawed by definition.
