The reason the shooter was said to be white is simple. The first descriptions of the shooter was that he was dressed in black, carrying gun, running on campus. A white guy. Those early identifiers were students seeing COPS RUNNING WITH GUNS. No one saw the shooter running on campus after the shooting. For a good reason. He was bleeding out in a tiny office.
So it was an honest mistake this time; the cop seen running must have been white.
