Patterson used to bull his way into the boxer. Nobody jabbed the way early Clay did. Holmes basically copied Clay who was his hero.

Patterson had the peek-a-boo style taking blow on his arms, but he used the jab to good effect. Going back further to the days of "Gentleman Jim" Corbett, Gene Tunney, and Billy Conn, all of whom were superb technicians and used the jab a lot. Ali did not invent the jab for heavyweights.
And then there were the great fighters like Sugar Ray Robinson, Willie Pep, Tony Zale, et. al. My great uncle fought the likes of Jimmy Wilde and Pete Herman.
