Navy Builds New Frigate Capable of Hitting N. Korean Targets

The Navy said Thursday that it has launched a new guided missile frigate capable of hitting North Korean targets on the ground.

The Navy held a launch ceremony for the 28-hundred ton frigate named "Daegu" on Geoje Island at 2 p.m.

The ship boasts formidable firepower to conduct antiaircraft, antiship and antisubmarine operations and even ground warfare. It is also South Korea's first warship with a hybrid propulsion system using both gas turbines and diesel generators. Gas turbines will be used to shore up speed in combat situations while diesel generators will operate in normal patrol missions.

The frigate will be equipped with five-inch guns, 20 millimeter Phalanx ammunition, surface-to-underwater missiles, semiactive air-to-air missiles(SAAM) and frigate-to-ground guided missiles with vertical launch capabilities.

The Navy explained that as the guided missiles can directly strike ground targets in the North from the ship, this will enhance the joint operational capacity of its fleets.

The Daegu is 122 meters long and 34 meters high with a beam of 14 meters and has a top speed of 30 knots.

Pretty, definitely NOT.

Determined? Sure looks that way to me.

G_d bless those brave seamen. They have always had a tough row to hoe.

To clarify: the Korean Navy. I was confused at first when I saw the Korean labeling on the ship diagram.

Daegu is a lot like the U.S. Coast Guard’s 378 foot 3000 GT High Endurance Cutters built in the 60’s, at least for the brief time in the early 90’s when they were carrying Harpoon missiles.

Daegu (Korean: tegu), literally 'large hill'.

Daegu is a city in South Korea, the fourth largest after Seoul, Busan, and Incheon.
It is the third largest metropolitan area in the nation with over 2.5 million residents.

Daegu was formerly spelled Taegu, and now is officially known as the Daegu Metropolitan City.

I presume the diagram in Korean is of the Batch 2 Ships or of the original 3000 ton FFX designs, because it is quite different than the Batch 1 ship below. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incheon-class_frigate
