Spike in Alaska wildfires is worsening global warming, US says

The devastating rise in Alaska's wildfires is making global warming even worse than scientists expected, US government researchers said on Wednesday.

The sharp spike in Alaska's wildfires, where more than 5 million acres burned last year, are destroying a main buffer against climate change: the carbon-rich boreal forests, tundra and permafrost that have served as an enormous carbon sink.

Northern wildfires must now be recognised as a significant driver of climate change - and not just a side-effect, according to the report from the US Geological Survey.

The USGS warned last year that Alaska could lose about a quarter of its permafrost by 2100, accelerating climate change.

We must purge these propagandists from the USGS and other government agencies.

Using real data and reasonable assumptions, the USGS could have warned last year that Alaska could gain significant acreage of permafrost by 2100, with implications of global cooling.

Every activity increases “global warming” oh wait, I mean “climate change” with these people.

I sometimes think they are just playing games, putting this out to see if anyone believes it as they laugh at the fools they think we are.

All these US government agencies have become laughing stocks.

The USGS, NASA, NOAA all have been politicized.

Just like it was with Pravda of the USSR, no one believes them.

The devastating rise in Alaska's wildfires is making global warming even worse than scientists expected, US government researchers said on Wednesday.

And they didn't see the restrictions on logging as the reason for the fires in the first place?

Forest Service likely to get more money to fight wildfires, at least for a year
While thinning can help counter decades of fire suppression that has allowed forests to become dangerously and unnaturally dense, where to draw the line between thinning and more expansive logging has been a constant fight.

Snip...While Murkowski questioned the proposed funding mechanism, she also suggested that the bill did not go far enough toward easing logging in her state. She called the budget bill language "a good start" but also "a missed opportunity."
In Alaska, she said, people are "at physical risk from fire and at an economic risk from restrictions on timber harvesting."

Hmmmmmm...

Perma frost is a carbon sink? Who but a enviro wacko would have thunk that Hydrogen and oxygen solidifying would somehow adsorb carbon.

As for the Alaska forest, most trees are worthless, as the perma frost binds roots so the trees are stunted. Best way to grow a respectable tree is to melt the perma frost...

Obama’s solution. Give Alaska back to Russia. Problem solved.

Here's the Wikipedia page on the permafrost carbon cycle

As for the trees, here is a map of the boreal forests

These climate change people are like a little boy with a hammer - everything looks like a nail. They will twist every observation to reinforce their silly theory.
