I thought there was a legal reason for fast food restaurants to not serve pedestrians? Wasn’t there a lawsuit akin to the lady spilling hot coffee in her lap?

I think that's it. It's a reasonable safety consideration: they don't want non-car-drivers plowed down by cars at the drive-through window.
And you know as soon as it happens, McDonalds will get sued again.

Robberies. Thugs ordering on the comm box like a driver, then shooting/brandishing a gun at the window when the seller opens it..
Much harder to do if the car is there, and the camera records the car license plate.
