FBI Agent's Gun, Badge Stolen During Vehicle Break-In at San Francisco's Alamo Square: Police
NBC Bay Area ^ | May 30, 2016 | Michelle Roberts

Police say the FBI agent's 40 caliber Glock 27, identification badge and credentials were taken.

An FBI agent's gun and badge were stolen during a vehicle break-in at San Francisco's Alamo Square over the weekend, police said.

San Francisco police Officer Carlos Manfredi said the FBI agent reported his vehicle was broken into on Hayes and Pierce streets between 12:30 and 12:40 p.m. Sunday.

Manfredi said the FBI agent's .40 caliber Glock 27, identification badge and credentials were taken.

Police did not have any details about possible suspects, and no other information was immediately available.

Neighbors who live near the popular Painted Ladies know all too well that any car parked in the area is a target for thieves. "Ours was broken into so many times the man at the glass repair place starting giving me a discount," said resident Sue Valentine.

An NBC Bay Area investigation earlier this year revealed that more than 500 weapons have gone missing from local and state agencies since 2010, either stolen or misplaced.

That had other Alamo Square residents wondering why a federal agent would leave his gun and badge in his car in an area known for theft.

No one from the FBI was available Monday, so it is unknown whether the agent in question will face discipline for leaving his weapon in his car.

The theft follows a series of stolen guns that were used in homicides in the Bay Area.

In October, three homeless drifters stole a gun from a civilian's car in San Francisco and used it to kill a backpacker and a yoga instructor.

In July, a gun was stolen from the vehicle of a federal agent with the Bureau of Land Management and used to kill 32-year-old Kate Steinle.

Thanks for the input. That might explain the gun part. But the badge and the credentials?

It's interesting how everything even remotely connected to Obama (in this case the FBI) has gone goofy.

One single department.........

A list of unaccounted for firearms discovered by SJPD during a 2010 audit.

And.....One agency, the Oakland Police Department, refused to turn over records or say how many guns the agency couldn’t account for, saying the records were exempt from disclosure as part of criminal investigations, even though other law enforcement agencies readily turned over similar records.

Probably he just didn’t feel like dragging it around. Mark said in his era the FBI was very much ruled by Hoover’s “investigation doesn’t happen at the office” mentality, agents were expected to be away most of the time, even if they didn’t have a reason to (like no active investigations). Which is why he spent a lot of time at the mall.

It’s really not that different. The internet makes it different because now all news is national. FBI agents have been leaving crap in their car and having it stolen for a long time. But back then it would be police beat news in the local paper if it got covered at all (and given the age of “professional courtesy” probably not covered), now it’s on the internet for all to see.

“That includes awareness that automobile smash and grabs have been effectively decriminalized in San Francisco as of a year or so ago.”

This isn’t just in SF, it’s state law driven by Prop 47 which drastically changed the levels of crime that constitute Felonys. I had an incident just last night in a North Bay city where I own commercial property. When I stopped by in the early eveining, I found two youthful vagrants setting up for the night on an outside landing, so I called the cops (who arrived after they had departed). The officer and I had a good discussion about Prop 47 and how it ties their hands in dealing with the problem of “homelessness.” He did say he was going to look around for them, and based on my description, he thought they were also out on parole. He said if he caught up with them, he “would violate them,” and send them back to jail. I got one guy a couple of years ago for “theft of electricity,” because he was using one of my outside electrical outlets to power his electric blanket! Between our generally good weather and lax laws, California has become a magnet for “the homeless.” And I wll add that in fifteen years of owning this property, I have never caught a Hispanic person. They have ALL been White!

Oh it happened. It just wasn’t national news because there was no internet to make everything national news. People have always decided to not drag their gun with them into some recreational situation or other, and often regretted it later.

JEdger was not your friend, especially for Tea Party Types. He would’a had NSA feeds directly into his office.

I just got back from a trip where I couldn’t bring my fullsized Glock 22 inside the house due to the Airbnb rental property agreement and the two toddlers staying with us. It cost me 70 bucks and 15 min of my time to bolt a digital fast open vault into the floor board of my trunk under the spare tire cover I have run flats so my spare well is empty. This should be required of all LEO who leave weapons in the vehicles. There is no way even with a crowbar some is removing that vault with 4 one half inch bolts to the framework now I can valet my car in confidence when I go into a 51% establishment and have to leave my daily carry in the vehicle. Bonus is a LEO stop would also have to obtain a warrant to open that vault should I get pulled over I wouldn’t ever willingly provided the code.

FBI agents weren’t even allowed to carry weapons until 1934.

I think losing your credentials is the more serious.

The gun is what stands out but anyone can get a gun legally or not. The credentials are worth a lot on the black market.

I know a guy who left his issued pistol, belt, and body armor etc in his truck with his coat hung in the window so every one could see the logo in the window and respect his authoratiii.

He was surprised when it was stolen out of his truck one night in the apartment complex parking lot.

Basically he got told “don’t do that again.”

INT. COCKPIT OF PLANE - NIGHT

Mosely and Perry stand in front of the Captain.

MOSELY - Inspector Mosely, FBI.

CAPTAIN - Mosely? Are all you guys named Mosely?

MOSELY - What are you talking about?

CAPTAIN - You're here to pick up a prisoner, right?

MOSELY - How'd you know that?

CAPTAIN - He was afraid to fly so he got off the plane. He left with an Agent Mosely.

Once again, Tuttle needlessly expounds on the obvious.

TUTTLE - Sir, that must mean that Walsh has your identification.

- Mosely can barely contain himself.

This guy needs to be fired. Agents that lose weapons should have their career ended. 19 year old soldiers who lose weapons are treated much more harshly than these supposedly highly trained Fed LEOs.

The FBI lost its SWAT van filled with weapons, grenades, and vests TWICE in Memphis, Tennessee. Beat that.

We keep a nice and quiet neighborhood where I live.
