Chicago police beefed up patrols for Memorial Day as more than 60 people were shot during the violent three-day holiday weekend. By Monday evening, at least 62 people had been shot across the city since Friday afternoon, including six who were killed. This surpasses the number of people shot during last year's Memorial Day weekend, though Chicago Police News Affairs said murders are down 50 percent compared to last Memorial Day.

Stricter guns laws should help.
62 shot and 6 dead is in keeping with normal averages. Last year (just looked it up) 56 shot, 12 dead. Way above average fatality rate.

Chicago has a 10% fatality rate, while Bakersfield (California) is around 50%.
Does Chicago have better hospitals, or are Californians better shots?

According to http://heyjackass.com/ this year only about 10% of those shot over the Memorial Day weekend died, whereas in the previous two years about 25% of those shot died.
Any guesses as to why?
