The latter is exactly what the “party elders” did in Virginia to Ollie North, when they funded the run of Marshall Coleman...The GOPe directly led to the election of Obama when they didn't back Alan Keyes financially in 2004.
The writing was on the wall way back then on the attitude of the 'party elders'.
