So I’ve been told. I’ve seen the movie and you can tell when they cut to actual footage. Hollywood couldn’t fake stuff like that back then.

Nope, scanned T-T-T last night and all footage in the movie was made for the movie. All of the Japanese planes are AT-6s and BT-13s modified to resemble Zeros, Kates and Vals. They took off from and angled deck Essex class carrier ironically the USS Yorktown at dawn.

The movie "Midway" uses a mix of stock footage and hollyweird effects. IMO it's not a good movie because of the silly morality play story line about the japanese girlfriend. Unnecessary for the plot and not likely for the period. It is simply modern morality overlaid to 1942.
