North Carolina police pulls out of Republican National Convention (NAACP same week Cincinnati)

A North Carolina police department backed out of sending 50 police officers to the Republican presidential convention in Cleveland in June over concerns about whether the city is prepared to host an event that is expected to bring at least 50,000 visitors to northeast Ohio.

Greensboro police made the decision earlier this week to pull its officers from the event, saying the city isn’t providing workers’ compensation for coverage for out-of-town officers and is requiring them to get physical exams they’d have to pay for themselves.

Deputy Police Chief Brian James wrote in a memo to the city’s police chief that he had spoken with police administrators experienced in planning events like the GOP convention and that they expressed “a lack of confidence in the city of Cleveland and their preparedness.”

"But for us, for coming out of our jurisdiction into another state, we had hoped that we would have better clarification on different logistical issues, and specifically what our assignments would be going into Cleveland," James said. "And we don't have that information at this time."

[ ] A number of city police departments in Ohio and other states have decided not to send officers to Cleveland, including Cincinnati, Loomis said.

A Cincinnati police spokesman said Friday that the previous police chief had discussed sending officers to Cleveland, but his successor decided against it because of the insurance issue and because Cincinnati is hosting the national NAACP convention the same week.

I am guessing this has more to do with the police union than the mayor. Police officers aren't going to go into a hornets' nest without clearly defined legal authorities and protections. To bring officers from out of state requires that those officers be granted law enforcement authorities. If not, those visiting officers might as well be regular citizens. Cleveland PD isn't providing those assurances and they are losing support for it.

All indications from the federal side is that Cleveland PD is not ready. People are starting to worry and the expectations of violence are only growing. This is going to be the World Series for professional rioters, and Cleveland PD needs to step up. Negative results from this convention will hurt city business for a long time.

They should be able to pull this off with sufficient effort from the state. The legal problem is that the city needs to ask for it. They won’t because they (democrats) want to have a sufficient disruption to block the GOP message. Democrats will spin the carnage as “this is what happens when you nominate a racist.” It may backfire with many voters who will find a bunch of anarchists and illegals rioting extremely offensive.

Very good point.

I also think this is what the #NeverTrump people will say, too.

In other words, all Trump's fault.

That issue regarding used of the National Guard came up in discussions involving Illinois or Baltimore. Apparently the Governor of a state CAN deploy the guard WITHOUT local request or approval, based on his/her assessment of the situation on the ground. It will be up to Kasich whether or not to act rationally in this situation, but I am not optimistic. At this point, I think he is as nutty as Glenn Beck and Mark Levin.
