What “ties” are they talking about? Back in the days of W.A. Criswell, Jeffries’ predecessor as pastor, the pastor and First Baptist Church were formidable players in Dallas civic affairs. However, the demographics of the city have changed radically since Dr. Criswell’s heyday 40-50 years ago Dallas was a majority white, middle class, Protestant, and culturally conservative city then. That population has passed away or moved to the suburbs. Dallas is currently a multi-ethnic city with the usual liberal politics of big cities.
