There’s no reason to imagine. Those empty shelf pictures could have been taken at my local Texas HEB. I always have a continuing two column list of BASIC foodstuffs printed out on a regular sheet of paper with the 25 most important items starred. I’ll be lucky to mark off a third of the list. Cauliflower, an apple corer and a fly swat have been on the list for a year. The last trip to the store was the first time they’d ever carried puff pastry sheets so I grabbed four. I’m not holding out hope they’ll be in stock next time. Milk and bread may not be stocked.

Powdered milk and flour have very long shelf lives.

On the other hand, insulin has about a 3 week shelf life and must be refrigerated. My wife uses it.
